It had been ten days until their scheduled databurst to Earth; ten days early, and Stargate Command dialled in. There’s been a coup, they said. The president’s dead, they said.

So where did that leave the SGC? And them? They certainly weren’t announcing their presence to the new regime; The Master, he called himself. Harold Saxon, former Prime Minister of Great Britain, and now he was Master of half the world.

And they were half a universe away. Nothing to do but watch, and wait, and hope. SGC had promised to stay in touch, to get back to them when the dust settled. It had been seven days, now. McKay had taken to pacing the control room, biting at his nails until they bled, folding his hands under his arms to hide the smears of red at their tips.

Weir sat in her office, staring at the models on her desk, remnants of civilisations being ground to dust as they sat there. She nodded when Zelenka updated her on how long it had been, on any energy readings (and there were none to be seen, not since the last team dialled in from off-world). But that was all. No orders, no questions. She sat, and she watched, as the last of their life before crumbled to nothing.

Sheppard had gone. Taken a jumper back to Earth to see “What the hell’s going on back there.” No word from him, or from O’Neill. They hadn’t dared to dial in, too scared that whoever was in charge now would know, would find out how to dial back. A shield wasn’t fool-proof when they still relied on IDCs, after all. So they waited. Daedalus still two days out, that left them nowhere. Lost in space, with no friendly robot to warn them of danger.

All along, they’d been preparing for the Wraith. Turning their backs on Earth to form their defence, to protect Earth from the threat outside. They just never thought to look within.
