I thought I heard you last night,
An echo and an afterthought,
Thought I heard your voice over there,
Returning all the gifts I'd brought.
The price it seems was far too high
(Though to tell the truth I'd pay again,)
I'd strap on sword and spear for you
Riding to a war I'll never win.
I thought I saw you last night,
A smile I lost with a momentary blink,
But realized, when I tilted my regard,
To see you again would crack open my armor's kink.
A flicker in my peripheral,
A motion that slowly turned my head
And I raised my gaze to find you again
A hundred things dying on my lips, unsaid.
I thought I felt you last night,
And I could hear a man I knew begin to cry,
And upon waking alone in my bed,
Learned the dreams dreamers dream too cruelly lie.
A shiver underneath these blankets,
And a heat that sent an aching over my skin
Made me clench my fists to sheets with trembling sigh,
Denied of the dreaming-sleep to find you, again.
