I don't know if
this script was legit in terms of it having been the one Singer pitched to the WB execs but it so it would have been both great and upsetting all in one go.
If so I can somewhat see why they nixed it and took Singer off of the Superman movies. He was obviously going for shock value and there is indeed that. Luthor gets out of jail (supposedly illegally incarcerated). It's five years according to the script (but the continuity of Lois' engagement to Richard is off by at least five years considering they have her engaged to Richard for a couple of months) since the last film (at the rate between when they supposedly were to begin shooting at the time it would have made sense) and things with Lois and Richard are a little more strained. Lois is onto Clark but is not sure where to go with it. There's another "Kryptonian" (not really) who we meet who wants to essentially mate with kal-el and rebuild the Kryptonian race. There's a lot of other stuff to go into it (Luthor gets in good with the President and saves earth but at the expense of any goodwill Superman had with the world at large). By the end of it "Clark" dies in the Daily Planet so that everyone escapes safely. It's unknown whether or not Lois has figured out his identity but it seems unlikely. So there you have it. Clark Kent dies in SRII if this script was to be believed. One aspect of him dies... the humanity grown within him through his life on a small farm in Kansas disregarded in downfall of the Planet building. I can see why this would not have set well with the execs. If Singer had insisted on that being there they would have canned him and justifiably. Clark Kent is as important to the mythos as Lois Lane, the Daily Planet, Lex Luthor and kryptonite. Try and kill/get rid of one of these as a major story element and you kill the fatted calf. I have to say that the script is enjoyable to read but there would have been such an outcry over the "death of Clark Kent" that the publicity surrounding that wouldn't be enough to save Superman long term.
