Unsurprisingly, What Is and What Should Never Be inspired a lot of great fic. Here's a selection of my favorites (besides the one I already rec'd
here), most of them fairly short. Some het, some 'cest, some gen.
Anyone Who Ever Had a Heart by
musesfool/victoria p. Dean/Carmen (sort of), PG. Everything I hadn't even realized that I wanted in a Dean-meets-Carmen-in-real-life fic. Heartbreakingly sweet and reflective and intensely present, thoughtful and real and absolutely, quietly, matter-of-factly perfect. Incidentally, if you haven't yet read her
Give Me a Leonard Cohen Afterworld, which I rec'd
here (mostly gen Sam pov, bit of Sam/Jess), you really should. She said the she rushed to finish it after she saw some spoilers for What Is and What Should Never Be, and now that I've seen the episode I can see why. I'm glad she did, because as much as I loved the episode, I love the fic at least as much.
things I left behind by
femmenerd. Dean/Carmen, PG-13/R. A sweet, wistful little snippet of Dean-reflection.
By Taking Our Time by
joosetta. Dean, Sam, gen with Wincesty overtones. A brief coda in which Sam steadily reassures Dean. Quiet and lovely and sure.
I Fear My Time is Short by
aynslee. Dean/Sam, NC-17. A moment of reconnection, deep and true in its simplicity.
Tied You With Your Flaxen Hair. Sam/Dean, NC-17 AU. More of an alternate look than a coda, and probably the most unusual of this set. I feel a bit torn about including it, as it doesn't ring perfectly true for me, but the djinnworld-Sam perspective is so interesting, the reality threads so twisty and complex, and the atmosphere so darkly heady, that it really needs to be here. I had been wanting more Sam, and this is a truly fascinating take.
And, Baby, I Wished for You by
anasuede. Dean, Sam, completely gen. If I had to pick one favorite What Is and What Should Never Be coda, it would be this one. It packs an amazing amount of evocative detail, gorgeous language, and quiet, achy, emotion into its 520 words, and does it beautifully. I loved Sam in this, so much. Dean, too, of course, but most especially Sam. Words cannot express how much I love this coda. So real, so right, so perfect.
