three score and ten

Okay, wow. If I'd ever had doubts about Dean being an Extrovert (see previous Myers-Briggs Type Indicator wanking here and here, especially the second), they would've been put to rest after this episode. Not that I did have doubts, but recent discussions about Sam being more of a people-person than Dean had me thinking about it more. I think that actually, they both have many people-oriented qualities, but of very different types. Sam is good at one-on-one interaction and putting people at their ease; he's very empathic and understanding, analytical and thoughtful. But I think that in essence, he's less comfortable with people than Dean is. He's maybe naturally better at dealing with (some kinds of) them, and he definitely still needs them. But he's much more likely to be sitting in a bar poking at his laptop than talking up the person next to him. Dean, meanwhile, has an impatient streak and can be rather abrasive if he's not trying not to be (and a bit... creepy... when he is trying not to be). But he likes people, in general. He likes talking to them, and seems to have a knack for striking up conversations with perfect strangers and finding out about them -- and not just because he needs information from them for a hunt, either. And I think that in his way he's just as empathic as Sam, though by default he has more walls up around that part of himself.

Knowing all the gossip on set and becoming completely and competently integrated into the PA network after just one day like it was as natural as breathing? Totally an extrovert trick. Charming the starlet with the perfect first interaction that was half truth and half acting? Adorable and very people-savvy. And really, Dean's whole mental orientation is people-oriented. Being a PA as a sort of belonging -- so very Dean. Losing Sam might well kill Dean, emotionally, because Sam is the family he belongs to, simple as that.

I was also thrilled to see Dean being so damn competent as a PA. He really would've made an amazing Jack (MIT roof-and-tunnel hacker). I'm getting closer and closer to considering making writing my first fic a summer project, as I get increasingly seduced by the idea of Dean at MIT.

Plus, the constant eating! I kept getting flashes of Rusty Ryan from Ocean's Eleven. :D
Actually, the more I think about it, the more Dean as Rusty Ryan makes a lot of sense. Good at planning, good at people. Too pretty for his own good. Eating all the time. Though I'm not sure there are sufficient numbers of compelling characters from Supernatural to cast Ocean's Eleven, given how few of them are recurring. But there have been enough good single-appearance characters that I bet something decent could be worked out. And Winchesters+Roadhouse is already 6... Tempting.

There were many many things I enjoyed about this episode, including all of Sam's reactions. And I'm so happy that they let Dean have a little fun (mmm, post-coital Dean). And well, I could certainly find things to criticize as well. (Though honestly, I feel much less critical about this ep than about "Heart," perhaps because the feel of this ep made such things as logical consistency and pacing and dramatic chemistry between actors much less relevant. Which is not to say I didn't like "Heart"! It's just that "Heart" was a very ambitious episode of a style that really invites criticism. Whereas I really have no desire to critique this ep, because it was so clearly meant to be candy. Really good candy, yes, but of the kind that automatically flips my suspension-of-disbelief switch to on.) But I'd better stop here, 'cause I have a lot of work to do and I have to be up early tomorrow.

Suffice it to say, yay!
