Actually I was planning to write about Veniss Underground (which rocks, but not before dinner), but then found out that the Arthur C. Clarke Award short list has been announced:
River of Gods, by Ian McDonald
Iron Council, by China Miéville
Cloud Atlas, by David Mitchell
Market Forces, by Richard Morgan
The Time Traveler’s Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger
The System of the World, by Neal Stephenson
I´m still reading Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson (which won last year), and if it could win, then I guess Time Traveler´s Wife can win. The latter at least has some science fiction elements in it (although I would never recommend it to my father), but Stephenson is just basically writing historical fiction.
And as Cloud Atlas was shortlisted for Booker too, I guess it´s the first science fiction novel to almost have won the Booker (kind of like Not Before Sundown, actually -except that it did win).
I don´t know much about Ian McDonald, except for what I´ve read from
here and have absolutely no idea what Market Forces is about (wild guess -globalism? Or a second Jennifer Government?).
