Living in the Hood?

About an hour ago about 17:00 I heard sirens, which is pretty normal since I live three blocks from the city police station and fire station. But accompanying the sirens were the sounds of gunshots. At first I thought it was illegal fireworks, but then I heard returning firing shots. Then I went to tell my mother, that I think I heard gunfire, that was when I heard more rapid firing shots, and another set of returning shots. That was when I figured it was time to close and lock the front door, which we always leave open when it's nice out.

About 5 minutes later, I heard a helicopter fly overhead. It was a Sheriff helicopter. It has been flying around in circles near my house for the last hour and is still there. About 15 minutes after the first helicopter arrived, I heard another helicopter approach, but it wasn't flying around in a perimeter like the Sheriff's copter, but it remained pretty static. This was the FOX News helicopter.

So an hour later, the 6 o'clock news finally came on and the news reported thata shooting happened on Garfield Ave. and Newmark Ave. This is a street that is literally two blocks from my house. It is also a street I drive down everyday. So far the shooter has managed to shoot four people, including a police officer. The SWAT team have apparently also showed up. Either way, the suspect has not been apprehended and the only description released is a "21-year old wearing a blue shirt." So it looks like the police are going door to door to find this suspect.

I live in what is considered a good neighborhood, but moments like this remind one that you're not really "safe" anywhere. Sometimes it's all about timing, and being at the wrong time or the wrong place could make all the difference.

ETA: Apparently, it was a road-rage incident that escalated to a stabbing then a gunfight. The suspect was killed, and the supposed second suspect was not found. If there even was a second suspect.

omgwtf!, the sky is falling!, life
