Today's poem

At the workbench    scribes hunch

illuminating the letters that begin

each word that ever caught the eye like a penny in the gutter

some freshly coined

still smelling like mint

some tarnished with use

tintinnabulate

cupcake

hella

75¢ words to answer $64,000 questions

clerks recopy all the conversations into ledgers

footnoting flashbacks     flagging foreshadowing

noting each woman that ever proclaimed a sentence

that might be served at a future date

All these ledgers notebooks logs tallies

line the shelves

a catalogue matured from a kitten

to better review the puzzling evidence

in front of the rows of spines

collections spring up

nine plastic goldfish

three quartz pieces the size of a thumb nail

four or five toy cows

lares and penates‏

in the break room someone always has the radio playing

the electric kettle heats up
