I got a Netflix account, 3 movies at a time, unlimited per month. So this is where I keep track of what movies I've watched and what I thought of them. I'm trying to rent as many different genres as possible. I did pick out some pretty lame movies, I mostly picked out anything that I've missed in the last 4 years that looks even remotely enteraining or interesting. I also rated a bunch of movies I've already seen and picked out some of Netflix's suggestions based on those.
So we shall see how this goes.
If you have any suggestions on movies I should rent, feel free to leave them in the comments. OR, friend me if you have Netflix, too!
Star ratings - 1/5 Hated it, 2/5 Didn't Like it, 3/5 Liked it, 4/5 Really Liked it, 5/5 Loved it
Little Children - 5/5 stars. Wonderful film about how adult lives can sometimes mimmick those of children. How sometimes we get caught up in our fantasies and forget how it affects the real world.
Lady in the Water - 5/5 stars. Great story. There's not a lot more I can say about it. I really enjoyed the story within the story, as well as the graphics and the relationships between all the residents.
Borat - 1/5 stars. Worst movie ever made. Seriously. What a waste. The only amusing parts were what people said to him. Way overrated.
The Painted Veil - 3/5 stars. I wasn't sure what to expect from this film. It was very long and slow. I lost interest in the first 15 minutes, but after about an hour it picks up and starts to get really interesting. It's a love story, but more realistic than most movie love stories.
Sherrybaby - 3/5 stars. It was alright, I mean. I liked it, but it wasn't a movie that I would watch over and over again. Maggy Gyllenhall is so beautiful, she did a great job with the character. I just wish the story would've had more to it. They really should've built up more on her relationship with her father, not just pussy foot around it. The brother totally should have confronted the dad or something. I don't know. I think the sister-in-law was a total bitch and looked to be about 19 years old. Yeah, I dunno. It was okay.
The Pursuit of Happyness - 4/5 stars. What a beautiful story. That's all I can say. I was surprised by how well Smith's son did with acting. He's a natural.
RENT - 3/5 stars. It was alright. Love the music, some of the scenes are a little silly though. Musicals are just...weird. I have to be in the mood for them.
Marie Antoinette - 3/5 stars. Eh. Cute I guess.
Notes on a Scandal - 4/5 stars. Love the plot, wasn't sure if the old lady was a lesbo or just really really creepy? Obsessive people like that give me the creeps. I still can't understand why any mature woman would want to sleep with a 14/15 year old. Like...18 I guess I can understand, 20 something, definately get that. I'm way not into younger guys at all, I like mature men with experience. I could never deal with someone who doesn't know what they're doing or are more interested in only getting themselves off than me, but whatever. To each their own.
The Virgin Suicides - 4/5 stars. I think every christian/conservative/overprotective family should be forced to watch this movie. When you try to shelter your children to the extent that the movie's family did...well that's what you get. Super rebellious, depressed, angry teenagers. I'm not saying let your kids do whatever they want, but for god's sake, let them have friends and go out! You all know I'm totally against home schooling because of this, too. Socializing is so important in building character and personality and learning and growing as a person. I would not be the person I am today had I not had the experiences I did. Sure it can be hard and kids will make bad decisions but you can't learn those lessons unless you have those experiences. I could go on and on and on but this is supposed to be a movie review. I liked the movie, I liked the message.
Pan's Labrynth - 4/5 stars. LOVED the story and everything about this movie! The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because it's subtitled. It's a spanish movie and sure I could actually understand a lot of what they were saying in spanish, but having to read subtitles and follow the story and watch the scenes makes it feel more like work than pleasure. If I was fluent in spanish and could just listen and not have to read, I would've loved this even more. I love that it feels like a children's story but has a lot of adult themes and scenes. They curse a lot, there's a lot of violence and blood, but there's that fantasy aspect that I always love. Almost has a feel of a more grown up Labrynth.
The School of Rock - 3/5 stars. Fun, feel good movie. Of course I like it, I'm a band geek! I also love Joan Cusack, she fit the role perfectly. Jack Black can get annoying when he's trying to hard to go over the top. There were some scenes were I just wanted to punch him.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - 3/5 stars. Fun movie. I can see the biblical correlation, but it's fantasized enough that you don't HAVE to see that. You can just take the movie in as it should be, a good kids fantasy film. Leave the Jesus crap at the door thankyouverymuch.
Apocalypto - 4/5 stars. Wow. Lots of blood and gory bits. Would've given it 5 but I hate subtitles. I know why they had to do it that way, but it's still annoying. The whole story behind those sacrifices...and how many people they sacrificed...it's really sad and disturbing. The way they treated the other tribes, it's so sad. Those hair do's were INSANE!
Idiocracy - 3/5 stars. Funny, but not hilarious. Interesting concept. I feel like the world is already to this point of stupidity, but that's just me. :/
Finding Neverland - 5 Stars. Wonderful take on Peter Pan. Beautiful imagery and the acting was phenomenal. This may be one of my favorite love stories from here on out.
Casino Royale - 4 Stars. Good action when there was action. I don't know what else to say about it. The whole...chair scene was pretty freaky. Of course the girl has to make thing complicated, good twist I guess. I'm actually happy with the way she made up for her betrayal in the end.
Reno 911!: Miami - 5 Stars. Fucking hillarious! Definately on par with the tv serious, if not better!
Black Snake Moan - 5 Stars. First off, I just love Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci and they did not dissapoint me in the very least. Justin Timberlake...that was kind of weird, but he did a good job. Really. I was touched by the whole story. The blues songs were so good. I want the soundtrack to this if they are on it. If Sam really did sing those, holy crap. He needs to put out an album. Damn.
Color Me Kubrick - 5 Stars. John Malkovich is a fucking genius! That is all.
21 Grams - 5 Stars. Sometimes is hard to follow cause it kind of goes out of order, then in order, then back to the beginning, then forward again. Once it all ties together though, man. What a strange...strange...I dunno.
The Fountain - 5 Stars. Again, sometimes hard to follow. What a sad but touching story. Is it just me or does Rachel Weiz look almost identical to Kate Winslet?
Blood Diamond - 5 Stars. Great action, great story. It's very sad and tragic. Please please please, if you are looking at buying any diamonds DEMAND non-conflict diamonds!
Babel - 4 Stars. Another confusing one. Man, I am all about the confusing movies lately! I wasn't quite sure how the Japanese storyline fit in right away, actually until the very end, but it was very touching. That was probably what confused me the most. Also, I couldn't figure out who the kids belonged to until the end either. Hmm. It's sad that the nanny got deported, the border patrol scenes were just insane. I'm sure that's exactly how they act there, too. It's kind of sad, but it's necessary I suppose. I am irked at how the media and everyone else immediately assumed that the incident was a terrorist attack. I hate how our country just jumps to that conclusion over ANYTHING that happens. It's terrible.
