When I was walking home from the gym tonight I saw a skinny little kitty in the parking lot. It ran away as I approached it, and squeezed between some boards which have been covering a closed grocery store for several years. Of course I went home and made a big bowl of dinner for the poor little thing - a mixture of about two cups of dry and a packet of wet cat food. When I went back over there it hid again, but I set the bowl by the crack in the boards, sat on the cold concrete, and waited. Eventually it came out, took a bite of food, and ran back in. It did that several more time before finally coming out and settling in front of the bowl for a good ten minutes of nonstop chewing and swallowing.
After a while the little sweetie looked up at me and cocked its head to one side, paused, then went back to eating. In the moment that it looked at me I fell head over heels in love - tears filled my eyes and I literally felt like someone had punched me in the chest. We sat there together for about twenty minutes - me freezing my ass on the concrete and the cat filling its tummy with food, and I think it's the happiest and most content either of us had been in quite a while. I think we'll both sleep well tonight.
