Where the willow meets the water, a tadpole met a caterpillar. They gazed into each other's tiny eyes, and fell in love.
"You are my beautiful rainbow," said the tadpole.
"And you are my shiny black pearl. Promise me you'll never change," said the caterpillar.
The tadpole promised.
But as surely as the weather changes, the tadpole could not keep his promise, and the next time they met, he had grown two legs.
"You have broken your promise!" cried the caterpillar.
"Please forgive me. I don't want these two legs. All I want is you, my beautiful rainbow."
"And all I want is you, my shiny black pearl. Promise me you'll never change."
The tadpole promised.
But as surely as the seasons change, the tadpole could not keep his promise, and the next time they met, he had grown two arms.
"You have broken your promise!" cried the caterpillar.
"Please forgive me. I don't want these two legs. I don't want these two arms. All I want is you, my beautiful rainbow."
"And all I want is you, my shiny black pearl. Promise me you'll never change."
The tadpole promised.
But as surely as the world changes, the tadpole could not keep his promise, and the next time they met, he didn't look much like a tadpole at all. He didn't even have a tail!
"That's three times you've broken your promise!" cried the caterpillar, and she climbed up into the highest branch of the willow tree, built herself a chrysalis, and cried herself to sleep.
After a very long nap, the caterpillar awoke, and she felt different. She climbed outside of her chrysalis and saw that the season had changed, and the grass had changed and the sky had changed, and she too had changed. However, her love for the tadpole had not changed, and she decided to forgive him.
The caterpillar, now a butterfly, flew down to the pond, where a large frog was sitting on a lily pad. “Excuse me, have you seen my…”
But before she could say “shiny black pearl” that frog leaped off the lily pad and swallowed her up!
And now he sits, thinking of his beautiful rainbow, and wondering what happened to her…
