Had a really nice, if very quiet weekend, interspersed by strange level of Mysterious Clumsiness. I managed (in addition to my usual head-bumping antics) to pour orange juice on my pasta, drop satsumas in my tea, break a cup I was using to measure peas and have a nosebleed in Starbucks. Some sort of Karma turnaround?
Went to the
National Portrait Gallery where I spent some birthday money on becoming a member and waltzed in free to the
David Hockney exhibition. There is a certain something about images of people, they way that they are composed and presented. I like it. It's like peeking into their heads. I'm a big fan of Hockeny's bright colours and clean lines, and the fact that he did a collage of his mother outside bolton abbey, prompting a rare "I've been there" gallery moment.
Went to watch
The Prestige on Saturday with
wingsmithI really rather enjoyed this fin de siecle romp focusing on the (often grim) competetiveness between two stage magicians - Bale and Jackman. Best bits included an exceptionally drunk double ("great, so now all I have to do is walk around drunk and no-one will spot the difference"), a field full of lightbulbs in the snow, naked Jackman and Michael Caine proving himself to be the King of Avuncular Knowledgeable Types. Because there was an awful lot going on, especially as there were twists in the plot as well as all the twists about the magic tricks themselves, it is apparantly better on the 2nd viewing. Definately one for the DVD collection once its out
Squandered my birthday money on stationary from Paperchase, a new orange jumper and all the comics and Myazake DVDs I could carry home from Forbidden Planet, which includes the Supreme Power Spin Offs and Justice v. 1 with lovely art work by the talented
Alex Ross.
