I'm in Ireland. It is overcast, cool and rainy (perfect Julie weather). We are going to walk along the cliffs at Wicklow Bay today. I'm feeling much better...for the moment, anyway ( Read more... )

It sounds like loads of fun. Jodi and I will be hiking in Maine at the end of June (in Acadia), and I can't wait.

When my muscles are sore from walking or climbing a mountain, the world seems more real. The soreness provides a tactile situation that isn't present in the "artificial world" of modern living.

Yes!!! That's it exactly. To feel my body in such an emphatic way, and to become aware of muscles I didn't know I had, forces a primal reality which often becomes numbed in the unsensual, technologized world of modern civilization.

I'm happy for you that you're hiking in Maine! I want to hear (and see) all about it...

Hope the rest of your trip goes well. I didn't know you live in Reston.

The rest of my trip was magnificent! We took an even longer hike on Saturday...12 miles of hiking, much of it uphill. I was in the zone...all I could think about was putting one foot in front of the other, and there was no space left in my mind for clutter or brooding thoughts. I was there, in the moment, almost entirely. And I was building yet more muscles!

Hope your trip is wonderful...
