It's possible to be in love with anyone, no matter how aware of their faults we are. In some cases, you do not truly love the person you are in love with, you love your image of them. I have loved people knowing full well how bad they were before, but I find it even easier to make excuses for the faults of others than for my own, as I can remain blissfully ignorant of their motivations and imagine them feeling whatever works best for me. It doesn't really matter when you are in love, that manic selflessness it can bring enough anaesthesia for the worst of it.
So, I guess I agree with literal meaning of the quote. It is possible to love someone you do not know well, if you count being 'in love' as love. I think the quote is meant to imply the opposite, though - that you cannot love someone that you truly know. I disagree on that. I think it is very possible to love someone that you know very well, in fact that's the only way the love can be pure, as opposed with love for an ideal. I don't know if that kind of knowledge excludes the less complete 'in love' definition, but it might.
