Bloody good first post ... and very good story too. I like your characterisation - the scene where Alexander and Hephaistion are reunited is nicely done, I liked Hephaistion's "We're making a spectacle of ourselves" comment. Also liked the brief connection you threw in there to Pausanias ... "It's hard to love a king." Little asides like that do a good job at tying characters in to the history of a story without writing a whole bloody text book, it's a good technique.

Well done too for putting your own spin on the history without compromising its integrity. Nice job.

That was really nice, you used the possibility of Hephaestion being exiled with the others and his reunion with Alexander very well.

I had read your other Mary Renault- based stories ( and liked them a lot - as you already know), but this was absolutely your best story so far, so you *must* keep on writing your own fiction, because you shine when you do...^_^

I loved the characterization, especially of Hephaistion, and the tenstion you have been able to build line after line, sparing the reunion between Alexander and Hephaistion until the very last part; I could feel Hephaistion's anxiety when He's approaching Pella, and then his growing desire to see Alexander when he meets with the other boys; then, their final reunion was touching....

I'm glad you posted this as really enjoyed it.

Liked the reunion between Alexander and Hephaisiton it was nicely underplayed and having Peritas bouncing around was a nice touch.

As for the line
