"What, sorry that the Admiralty has no taste when it comes to designing uniform hats, or sorry because you are about to do something unspeakable to it?" Sir Edward said, rather flippantly. "But that is indeed my best hat. We Admirals are also permitted a plainer version for everyday use, which has considerably less gold lace." He shrugged. "I had it with me, but I dare say it is...well, wherever the rest of my belongings are at the moment."

Simon hadn't been intending to do anything unspeakable to the hat, but now that the idea had been brought up... He looked at it calculatingly. Not enough gold lace on it to make it count as boodle, unfortunately, not with bouillon prices the way they were these days.

because Norrington needs to stop being upstaged by Pellew. (Even if he's not exactly being sociable) honorandbrocade September 23 2007, 06:07:11 UTC
"With respect, Admiral, prehaps that was not the right thing to say," Norrington commented dryly. "I'd keep a very close eye on that hat now if I were you, sir. Or you could well easily find it missing."

Simon turned the full blinding force of his wide, innocent blue eyes on Norrington then; the look he may as well have had a patent out on, for it had driven more than one Scotland Yard inspector to distraction over the years. "Why, Jimmy," he said in shocked tones, "you have a filthy, suspicious little mind, so you do!"

If Simon had been female, the look may have had a far greater impact. (The good Commodore - as shown by his interest in one Miss Swann, was rather partial to blue eyes, though he was not exactly sure how to deal with the person behind them.)

As it was, Norrington showed no visible reaction - yes, not even to the overly familiar use of his name. "It's my job," he said, rather smugly. "And you sir, remind me of someone most strongly." He paused. "I am struggling to determine whether that is a good thing or not."

"And here I thought I had a corner on the market for lovable scamps and endearing rogues," murmured Simon, the innocence in his eyes fading to a thin veneer over the ever-present dancing devils of mischief. "Why, it must be a good thing - for whoever it is that's like me, at any rate."

Moira raised her eyebrow at Simon, not saying anything, but being thoroughly amused at the preceedings.

"This is better than a night out at the theatre," Sir Edward commented to Moira, also very amused at the goings on and trying to avoid laughing out loud. "If the fellow the Commodore is referring to, is who I think it is...he might be correct about that."

Moira smiled. "Oh, really?" she said to the man.

"It's a bit of a long story, Miss Niall," he said, "but I was wondering where I'd heard the Commodore's name before. Then I remembered some of the tales they used to tell back when I was stationed in the Caribbean. The Commodore and a Certain Individual featured very heavily in most of them." He winked. "A certain pirate individual."

Moira grinned. "How very interesting."

Sir Edward nodded in agreement. "Quite," he said. "The Commodore was rather an infamous figure in his day. He was known as the scourge of piracy in the Caribbean, or suchlike." He paused, frowning. "I rather hope that our theatrical friend over there is not involved with piracy." (He was referring to Simon, of course.)

Moira shrugged. "Can't say either way, I've only been here a bit myself. But as for legitimate piracy, boats and all, I would wager no. Legitimate piracy died out ages ago. If you mean any sort of piracy, land included...then I would be less sure. Possibly even inclined to say he was. But I don't know Simon very well," Moira concluded, smiling truly at him.

"Oh, then Norrington will be pleased," he said with a small smile. "I don't know him that well either, but from reputation I know he cannot stand pirates. Of course," he added, "if that indeed is the case, it will also mean that he is now out of a job!"

He looked across to where the two were standing. "I'd better get over there, Miss Niall. Keep an eye on things, before the Commodore feels inclined to run our friend through with that sword of his."

"I suppose that wouldn't be a good thing then," she joked. "Go right ahead, then," Moira said with a grin.
