Pain, Angst and More Pain

"Rose? Jack?" he thought for a moment then added, "any random bloke Jack might have brought home last night?"

He pulled himself up and began to pace around the console.

Fixing what?

That voice! It had been nagging at him a lot recently, and he knew there was something he was supposed to be doing. His fingers clenched in his hair as he thought.

Yesterday she, yes it was definitely a she, told him that he wasn't doing himself any favors by putting it off.

But putting what off?

He knew that he knew, but had a feeling he didn't want to know and so was refusing to think about it. But the voice was getting more persistant, forcing him to think about it. He wanted to blame Aternaville, this blasted town that shouldn't exist, but existed nonetheless. Then again, Rose wasn't supposed to exist here, but she did. He stopped mid-pace, his hands falling to his sides.

Rose.

Which is what he had been avoiding thinking about. She shouldn't be here. The rip she caused to return to him shouldn't be there. He couldn't really blame himself for not thinking about it, who would want to think about that, but he couldn't keep looking away from it. He had to face it. He should have fixed it long ago, but he'd been too happy to see her. He hadn't been able to bear the thought of sending her back.

But he had to. He had to send her back.

And it was going to break her heart. He was going to break her heart.

He sprawled out on a chair, staring at the glowing light of the TARDIS console, steeling himself to do what needed to be done.

Whether he wanted to or not.

Jack was going to kill him.

"Yes, Doctor?" Rose entered the console room with a confused expression. She tugged at one of her braids nervously as she stepped around on the grating. The Doctor hadn't called for her and Jack into the console room in a long while.

"Hullo," he said, jumping out of his chair and looking over her shoulder. "Where's Jack?" he asked, his face an unreadable mask. "Can't start without Jack," he added, forcing a smile.
