Fred walked into the bookstore hoping to get a new book to keep her entertained. She'd already read through every book she'd brought with her, most on the plane, which was a feat in itself. She walked around, looking for the science section when she spotted him.
"Wesley?" she whispered. It couldn't be. She'd left Wes in Los Angeles with Angel and Charles and...it wasn't possible!

Wes perused through the long rows of books, glancing at some of the titles. Nothing in this section was really reaching out for him, but then again, one wasn't supposed to judge a book by its cover, or its title for that matter.

He made his way through half of the store, ending up with half a dozen or so books stacked in his arms. A few were titles he'd heard of before, a few were books that had just seemed interesting, and one was a book on demons. One could never be too careful.

One of the books slipped from the stack, and he stooped down awkwardly, trying to pic it up without dropping the rest of them. He managed to get it, then looked up. He saw a figure standing in the aisle in front of him, and his mouth dropped. He let all of the books fall to the floor in his shock. "Fred?!"

"Wesley," she repeated quietly. She stood looking at Wesley and all his books on the floor. Bending down, she gathered his books and handed them to him. "I'm...surprised to see you here," she replied, choosing her words carefully, not being her usual rambling self.

He accepted the books from her, mumbling 'thank you' as he continued to stare at her.

When she spoke, he shook his head and tried to compose himself. He shouldn't be so surprised to see her here, should he? After all, he'd known where she'd gone, a little bit of research digging up airline records...

But still, it was almost surreal. She was standing in front of him, speaking with him. It was something he thought he'd never experience again. And the world wasn't even ending...

"Yes. It's...It's a surprise to see you as well. Um...how're...how're you doing? You look well. You look really well."

"How am I doing? Wesley, we're in Canada. It's cold and small and quaint and...What are you doing here?" she rambled. Wesley was having his usual effect on her. It was completely like Wesley to act as if it were nothing out of the ordinary that her found her in damn CANADA. She stood there, trying to keep her jaw from the floor.

He shifted where he stood.

Busted.

"I've just gotten here; got off the plane a few hours ago." He sighed. "I couldn't take it anymore, Fred. We...we were losing. We were always losing. No matter how many battles we fought, no matter how many friends we lost, we weren't making any progress. Demons and the darkness were still coming." He looked down at the floor. "Besides...I missed you."

Fred almost melted. Wesley missed her. She missed him, too, incredibly.
"I know what you mean. I couldn't handle it all anymore. It just got to be too overwhelming," she babbled. "I..I missed you, too Wesley," she said quietly.

Wes found himself smiling at her. He hadn't been lying...he had missed her...terribly so. Los Angeles hadn't been the same since she'd left. Like the sun had gone away. Even Angel had noticed, making some snide comment about how Wesley was losing his touch. Truth was, Fred's leaving had made him think. Made him realize just how little good they seemed to be doing. Especially while in Wolfram & Hart's grasp...

He looked down at the floor again. "So...how are things, Fred?"

Wesley made her think of Los Angeles and everything she left behind. He was all the good and Wolfram and Hart was the bad. She was excited that the good had followed her, without the bad.
"Things are okay, I suppose. I just moved in here, I'm still getting settled. It's a nice town, quaint and quiet. The people here are a rather eclectic bunch. How are things with you?" she said in a single breath.

He smiled when Fred managed to say an inhuman amount of words in one breath.

"I've only just arrived, so I don't think I've been exposed too much to the...eclectic people that populate this town. But, I'm sure things will never be dull."

He paused for a moment. "Things are going well enough, I suppose. I also assume that you wonder why I came here, aside from you." He sighed. "It wasn't enough. All that we did, all that we fought, it wasn't enough. We were still losing. And I couldn't stand it. So I ran. I suppose that makes me a coward, then," he said, a sad grin on his face.

"We can be cowards together," she started, "because that's one of the main reasons why I came here as well. I couldn't stand it at all. It was as if we were going 50 steps backward with one step forward and we just seemed to be worse off than we were without all the resources."

She breathed. It was nice to have someone to talk to who knew you and knew all of your quirks. Someone she didn't have to be on guard around.

"So where are you staying?" she asked.
