Simon had the longest day at work. He just wanted to get home and spend time with Kaylee and River, catching up, talking, laughing, relaxing. He'd wanted to forget about work, about his patients, and focus on the two women most important to him in his life. He smiled as he left the clinic that day, heading for the car and making his way through downtown traffic towards the house in the hills.

He made it to the house quickly enough and pulled up in the driveway. Getting out of the car, Simon picked up his briefcase and suit jacket. He made sure the door was locked and jogged up to the front door, pulling his keys out. Unlocking the door, Simon stepped inside and set his briefcase down by the door, hanging his jacket up on the hat rack. After he slipped his shoes off, Simon made his way into the living room.

"Kaylee, River, I'm ho--" He stopped abruptly.

His eyes widened at the sight in front of him. Sitting extremely close together on the couch, both their eyes closed, River and Kaylee sat kissing deeply. His breath caught in his throat and all he could do was stand there, watching the scene before. Swallowing thickly he tried to fight the arousal pulsing through his veins. No, it wasn't right for him to be aroused by it, oh but was he ever...

Kaylee whimpered softly as she felt River's hand drifting over her knee, the feeling of the soft touch of her lips making her shiver. This was daring, forbidden, almos wrong. They were friends, Kaylee had never considered being anything more with River. Inara maybe, but never River.

Yet now as River deepened the kiss, Kaylee didn't pull away, staying from the feelings of seduction that emanated from River's body. She whimpered helplessly into the kiss, feeling River in control, even though she herself was the elder of the two.

Kaylee didn't even hear Simon come in or call to them, she was so wrapped up in the kiss. After a moment she sensed something different in the room and pulled away, opening her eyes slowly. She looked down at River for a moment, still completely amazed and breathless, before she realized someone was standing in the doorway. Kaylee looked up and as Simon's shape took form in her vision, her heart plummeted and her eyes widened.

"S-Simon.." she said shakily, alarmed at his sudden appearance. "W-when... h-how long have y-you.." she trailed off, wondering just how long he'd been standing there. Long enough by the look on his face, though she couldnt quite read his expression in the slghtly dim light.

River knew that he was home, the minute he pulled in the driveway. Now, the smart thing probably would have been to remove herself from Kaylee when she realized big brother was home. That would have been the smart thing to do. That was not, however, the fun thing to do. And she was all about having fun. Too many things had been too serious lately.

Coyly peering over her shoulder at him, she licked her lips, her eyes finding his. "Hi, Simon..." Moving over a little, she settled more beside Kaylee, resting her head on her friend's shoulder. Her hand went down to Kaylee's knee, rubbing it with her fingers. She loved watching Simon, the look he had on his face. And the bulge that would be quickly building in his pants.

She heard the tremble in Kaylee's voice. Silly Kaylee. Need not be worried. Need not be angered. More like, curious, at that. River couldn't decide where she wanted to look, Simon or Kaylee, so she eyed them back and forth. Like a tennis game. "How was work," she purred.

Simon walked into the house, leaving all of the things he'd brought in from work in the corridor. He dropped his briefcase, kicked off his shoes and hung up his suit jacket, making his way further into the house. He wondered where River and Kaylee were. He hoped that Kaylee hadn't been up and about too much, it wouldn't have been good for her ankle, and that River had just taken the day slow, reacquianted herself with the young mechanic.

As he made his way into the living room, he announced his arrival, being completely cut off when he noticed the sight in front of him. River. And Kaylee. Kissing?!

His eyes widened and he watched the two of them pull apart, seeing the content look on River's face, as though nothing out of the ordinary had happened, and the shocked look on Kaylee's face. He swallowed thickly, trying to get his quickly hardening arousal under control.

"S-Simon.. W-when... h-how long have y-you.."

"I just... I didn't... I wasn't..." he mumbled.

"Hi, Simon... How was work?"

"Good," he replied tightly. "Work was good."

He walked slowly, almost awkwardly toward the two of them, trying not to let his arousal show. He took up a place near the couch in his favorite arm chair, looking at the two of them intently, unable to look away. What he'd just witnessed had both scared and aroused him, and at that point he wasn't sure which of the two emotions were winning.

"What were you two..." he cut himself off.

He just couldn't bring himself to ask.

Kaylee was severly alarmed by Simon's sudden appearance, as well as River's apparently completely calm expression and tone. Kaylee's heart was pounding as though she'd been doing something wrong and had been caught red handed, staring at Simon with wide eyes. She felt River's hand on her and her primary instinct was to pull away put she sat frozen, not moving at all.

"I just... I didn't... I wasn't..."

Kaylee was slightly relieved that Simon sounded as shocked as she was, her increased heart rate slowing the tiniest bit.

"What were you two..."

Kaylee's cheeks began to redden, she could feel the heat rising. She glanced at River, about to try and answer, but she didnt know what to say, or even if her voice would work. This was certainly an interesting situation to find themselves in...

River raised an eyebrow. "Simon, if you have to ask, you didn't do well in your medical studies, did you?" River smiled. "Copulation, learning by touch and feel instead of wording and language. Loving and caress, comforting Kaylee and making her smile."

River looked down to Kaylee, then back at Simon.

"You're not happy... Why? You love her, you love me? I love her, I love you. She loves you, she loves me. Loving in one circle, always flowing, bonds never breaking? What's wrong with that?"

River stared back and forth between them, not sure what was going on? Why couldn't they all just love each other?

Simon glanced between Kaylee and River several times, feeling tension fall like a blanket over them, thickening the air, choking them, weighing on him. He tried to shake off the feeling as he sat down, his eyes settling on his sister as she spoke, his cheeks flushing the same delicate pink as Kaylee's.

"Simon, if you have to ask, you didn't do well in your medical studies, did you? Copulation, learning by touch and feel instead of wording and language. Loving and caress, comforting Kaylee and making her smile."

"I don't think all the studies in the thirty allied worlds could tell me what it was I just saw," Simon said slightly huffily.

It had been a rhetorical question, really. Just saying something for the sake of saying it. He knew perfectly well what he'd seen, he just didn't want to admit it to himself. He glanced at Kaylee, hoping she could offer him some insight. Instead, River's words cut through the silence again.

"You're not happy... Why? You love her, you love me? I love her, I love you. She loves you, she loves me. Loving in one circle, always flowing, bonds never breaking? What's wrong with that?"

"I'm perfectly happy, River, I'm among the people I love the most in the world," he said tensely. "It's just... this... we can't... I'll leave you two to what you want to do."

He was afraid to be excited by the situation. River was his sister for crying out loud. Sure, they'd shared a few moments, a few touches when they were younger, but then he learned how wrong it was and it hadn't been the same since. Now, old, familiar feelings were rising in him and he didn't know if he could face them. He didn't know if he could embrace her as a woman, not his sister, along with Kaylee. Oh, he could easily embrace Kaylee like that and God knows he had in the past... but his meimei?

River stood up, staring hard at Simon. She wanted to speak before Kaylee did, knowing how scared Kaylee was feeling. She advanced towards Simon, standing in front of him, shaking her head. She looked a combination of hurt and angered.

"Not wrong. You leaving accomplishes nothing." She wanted to reach out for him, but she would only scare him, that she knows. A heavy sigh escaped her lips as she looked at him.

"We, as a family, the three of us, share the love, but love has to be given, not taken, not forced. Then it's not love. Then it's harsh, cruel, like what they did to me, taken. Not love anymore." Her bottom lip trembled a little. "She doesn't fit here. One plus one doesn't equal three. She was wrong to think it did. Mathematics and logic always overrule." River took a step back, looking back and forth between Simon and Kaylee. She moved quietly to the doorway, watching them intently.

"I'll go. For now. Leave you two... to just be."

Kaylee was mortified, scared and a million other emotions all at once. Simon looked as uncomfortable as she did, but River merely looked upset now, yet still calm.

"We, as a family, the three of us, share the love, but love has to be given, not taken, not forced. Then it's not love. Then it's harsh, cruel, like what they did to me, taken. Not love anymore. She doesn't fit here. One plus one doesn't equal three. She was wrong to think it did. Mathematics and logic always overrule."

Kaylee felt tears prickle her eyes. What had she done? Her coming here had broken the bond between the young woman and her brother. Shooting a saddened, apologetic glance at Simno and then at River, Kaylee was aout to rise and leave as River walked towards the doorway.

"I'll go. For now. Leave you two... to just be."

"No... River..." Kaylee managed to find her voice, choking out the words. "This is my fault. I'm the one that should leave." She rose carefully and limped towards the door, trying to ignore the throbbing pain in her ankle. She passed River without meeting her eyes and climbed the stairs painfully, eventually reaching her room and collapsing on her bed, tears in her eyes.
