With the Master's arrival months before, Jack hadn't spent much time within the TARDIS. If he was going to be honest with himself (and he rarely was) he missed rambling through her vast corridors. Now, whatever time he had to spent there, was short. He got in and got out before he could run into the man that called himself Harold Saxon.

Jack hefted his backpack over his shoulder and pulled open the door of the TARDIS, blinking when he came face to face with a young woman that seemed vaguely familiar. Then he realized where he had seen her. In the ravine the night the Master had arrived.

"If you're looking for the Doctor, little girl, you won't find him. He's out exploring." The smile Jack gave her had none of the charmer's edge to it. It was as open and honest as he got out in public.

As she listened, River let her head fall a bit to one side, expression deeply observational. She acknowledged his presence psychically but found it unnerving that his mind wasn't open; it was not actively shielded from her but things were all a bit...foggy. This intrigued her.

"Not looking for him," she answered after the temporary confusion passed. "I like...talking...to her." Vaguely smiling, River reached past him and pressed a hand against the wall. Her eyes momentarily unfocused, the young woman found herself speaking again.

"Where are you going, singing man?"

"She sings sometimes." He could still hear the TARDIS in the back of his mind. Always there even when he was far away. Some nights, she called to him, trying to bring him back home. But he couldn't, not with the Master there. Sadly, Jack reached out and ran a hand over the smooth wood of the door.

"Me? I'm going for a walk. And then, I'll probably have a drink. Would you like to join me for the walk?" Jack smiled and offered the girl his arm.

River took a small step away, drawing her hand back like he was toxic. It worried her, not being able to read him and she redoubled her efforts, for the first time trying to push through his fog and into the clarity of confusion.

There was no malice in his smile, but smiles could be deceiving, she learned.
