To say Owen's head was pounding was a severe understatement. A headache caused by too much alcohol and displaced frustrations concerning Toshiko raged in the space beneath his temples and under his forehead.

He'd gotten into his flat that morning by unceremoniously climbing a tree to reach his bedroom window, and looked all the more bruised for it. The shower had been pleasant, but mentally unrefreshing; Owen was left feeling damp, confused, and pissed off.

A trip to the grocery store seemed fitting - as the contents of his fridge were sparse and unremarkable. A few alka seltzers and some eggs and he'd have enough ingredients for his patented hangover cure. (Warning: do not drink if pregnant or if you ever want to taste food ever again.)

His head hung low, Owen didn't make allowances for people who got in his way, nearly knocking one bewildered-looking teenager to the tiled floor. "Jesus, watch where you're going you - huh?" Owen blinked and came to a halt mid-step. Purple skin? Why did that sound so familiar?

Involved in peering up at the signs hanging over the aisles, Clarice was totally caught by surprise when someone plowed straight into her. Her hand on the cart saved her from falling, but she stumbled back and dropped the list. "Sorry! I'm sorry!" she cried automatically, ducking her head. She could feel the person gaping at her and prayed silently that he'd just accept her apology and leave.

Owen folded his arms over his chest and squinted at her. "Wait wait wait, I do know you. You're Clarice, that purple girl." Clearly, Owen never made a habit of mincing words.

"I'm Owen, remember? And what are you doing, standing in the middle of the isle like that. You're just askin' people to ram into you."

He grinned, despite it all, to show her that he was joking. (Mostly)

"Owen?" she repeated blankly. Then, memory hit. "Owen Harper! Right! I'm sorry. Hello. Nice to meet you?" She retrieved her list, clutching it in both hands nervously as she finally looked up at him.

And had no idea at all of what to say.

"Um, did your... did your friend like the scones? Miss Sato?"

What a strange girl, Owen thought to himself, with a shake of his head grabbed a carton of eggs as well. And not just because she's purple and can rip things up with her mind. He belatedly thought to himself that it would be a bad idea to make her ticked.

"Are they expecting you home?" he inquired, with long strides following her easily.

"Not- not at any specific time. I didn't tell them where I was going? It's supposed to be a surprise..." She shrugged. For some reason she couldn't explain, saying it out loud made her feel dumb. What kind of surprise was grocery shopping?

Maybe it was just Owen and his worldly-wise, dismissive attitude that made her feel immature and silly. Like she wasn't worth his time.

And yet he was still here. Was that just because she had his groceries hostage?

"Grocery shopping?" He laughed. "A surprise? How's that supposed to work?"

Owen had no sense of home-making or living cooperatively with others. The idea that shopping for groceries was an offering of peace was new to him and more than a little ridiculous.

Yet he stayed because Clarice was simply amusing. The way she flitted around, nervous and jumpy, was so hilarious it made it easier for him to forget his hangover.

See? she thought. It was stupid.

"I-it's kind of silly, I guess..." She studied the packets of chopped nuts and dried fruit conscientiously, picking a couple and laying them atop everything else in the cart. "It's just, Moira - she found me first when I - when I got here - and I didn't have anything at all, not anything. But she and Lulu, they've let me stay with them and, and lent me things - these are even Lulu's clothes," she added, tugging at the hem of the pink shirt she wore. "So I - I just wanted to do something... you know? For them."
