Nokoru's voice and face were filled with nothing but surprise and genuine pleasure. The last thing he'd expected when he'd come out today was to run across his guardian! The man hadn't been seen in months. Nokoru was given to understand that sudden disappearances were almost as usual as sudden appearances here, and that generally people didn't re-appear, but he was quite pleased that Ianto had decided to be an exception. Not that he needed a guardian, except (bah) legally, and no one had pressed the issue in the intervening time. But he liked the man!
"What a pleasant surprise!" The blond teenager hurried over to Ianto, still beaming. "How are you? Are you all right?" The last was added as he got close enough to see the befuddled look on the older man's face.
Oh, what a nice young man. He certainly looked cherubic enough, though there was a general lack of angelness and a lot of normality about him. He did know who Ianto was at least.
"I'm expected?" he asked, blinking a bit more and squinting round at their surroundings again. "Well, that's good. What do I do next? You wouldn't happen to know, would you? Oh, sorry, you know my name but can I have yours?". Belatedly, Ianto stuck his hand out and offered up a friendly smile. The smile tugged at his cheek where a cut was healing and he winced. Funny, but you'd think small things like that would be taken care of after you died.
That gave Nokoru pause. Only a moment's pause. He was a very bright young man and this wasn't the first time, after all.
Because sometimes people didn't realize they were re-appearing.
He may already have gone too far to draw back with his greeting the way he had with Rachel; it wouldn't have been so easy if he'd been face to face with her like this. But he could be as diplomatic as possible. Nokoru was good at that.
"Oh - I beg your pardon, how rude of me. Imonoyama Nokoru." He inclined his head politely, and then clasped Ianto's offered hand in the Western fashion. "Nokoru will do just fine. I must admit I wasn't expecting you, but that doesn't mean I'm not pleased to see you." He tilted his head slightly, considering. "Please don't be alarmed, but am I wrong in thinking you don't remember having been here before?"
It was rather a good thing that he met this polite young man because if anyone else came at him, he would have freaked out all over them. More than likely. But the gentle and polite Nokoru wasn't anything to freak out over. He couldn't possibly be something worthy of being freaked over.
He actually reminded Ianto of Toshiko, except more blond and less ... woman. Right.
Rubbing at the cut on his cheek a bit, Ianto nodded in response to Nokoru's question. "Right. No, haven't been here before. Er. It's nice to meet you too. Er. Meet you. Nevermind. Would .. you happen to know what I do next? Should I be registering somewhere?" Was it like Uni? Ianto was still convinced he had arrived in the afterlife. It'd be some time before he let go of that idea. He did remember dying after all.
"Register?" Nokoru's brow furrowed briefly. "No, I don't think so. Eventually we may want to let the police department know you're-- here." The pause as he aborted the word 'back' in favor of a safer one was almost imperceptible.
He considered his options. The first to cross his mind was to offer Ianto a cup of tea at Teaspoons, see whether being there jogged any memories. But if it didn't, they almost certainly would run into more people who'd recognize him there. That might scare him. Nokoru made a decision. "Will you walk with me, Mr. Jones?" He indicated where a path branched off the sidewalk and headed into the park. "I'll do my best to explain."
Really, Nokoru was a nice young man. Ianto bobbed his head, ignoring his confusion for the moment and followed along. "Police department. Then I'm completely mental in thinking that this is some sort of afterlife, am I." Who needed police in heaven?
Though, who's to say that Ianto'd go to heaven? He rubbed the back of his head and looked about, taking a moment to loosen his tie. "It's .. quite nice, your town, I admit. I'm utterly baffled as to why I'm in it, but as I seem to recall dying before I got here, I'm rather glad I'm alive and here. Sort of."
Not the first time Nokoru had heard about someone being transported here after their death, although he didn't remember that having been the case with his guardian. Maybe this Ianto Jones came from a later point on the timeline? He didn't look any older, though. That was disquieting.
"Not mental at all," Nokoru assured him as they walked into the park. "This town is... unusual, in many ways, and you aren't the only one to appear here after your death instead of moving on to a more traditional afterlife. Put simply, you are alive. But as to what exactly brought you and nearly everyone else here, we just don't know yet. It's one of many mysteries.
"For instance, I traveled here deliberately. But when I arrived, I found that over two decades had gone. Very Rip Van Winkle, but without the long grey beard, thankfully." Casually he flipped open a fan that hadn't even been in his hand a moment ago, and held it under his nose. A cartoonish mustache and beard had been painted on it. He winked.
