Alba had gone back to school, with many thanks to Mr. Baron. After all, having a birth date which would put you two grades ahead might have been nice if Alba was actually far enough ahead in her classes to be two grades ahead. But as it was, with the traveling, she certainly was not. Seventh grade here in 2010 wasn't terribly different from back home. Sure, it was Canada so they didn't exactly have the same history classes, but her English and Literature classes were similar. The only thing she was having real trouble with was math. The system they used here was quite different from what she'd used at home. It was "new math" and made use of a lot of word problems, which would be fine if she understood what she had to do. The teacher suggested she try it on her own for a few days before coming back for explicit help.
When it was lunch time, Alba got her tray, picked out the food she wanted (healthier than she would have liked but more junk food than she'd be allowed back home), paid for her lunch, and sat at a table alone with her math book open, puzzling over a problem about growing trees.
