There wasn't a lot Rory was really sure of, at the moment ( ... )

Lily was telling the assistant that no, she hadn't had any sort of medical license exactly. Not a nursing degree, not a doctorate. She wasn't a phlebotomist or an x-ray technician. The woman looked into the big television-like box in front of her. A computer, the people at the hotel had called it. It was impressive muggle technology, that was for certain. The woman had been looking through her vacancies when Lily's arm had been seized. Her wand was not in her hand, hiding in her pocket and trying to be inconspicuous. There was no need to flout the Statute of Secrecy here, even if she couldn't presently find the Ministry. They'd find her, she was sure ( ... )

Amy. Of course, Amy! Had he forgotten her? No, it was more like, in his bemused state, he hadn't thought of her. But the sight of this woman brought things flooding back. Before he was a nurse, he was a Roman. He remembered that. Hanging out, thinking Roman thoughts, doing Roman things...

Before that, he'd died. Which was really very inconvenient because he was supposed to be getting married, and damn that interfering raggedy Doctor anyway because none of this would have happened if it wasn't for him ( ... )

His face fell upon realizing that she wasn't this Amy. Lily felt terrible about it. She had no idea who this stranger was, but he looked as if he desperately needed a hug. "It's fine." He was British. That was definitely noticeable. Given that she was also British in this bonkers Canadian town.

"You're English," she noted aloud. "What's a nice English bloke like you doing in this completely barmy place in Canada?" Though she could really talk. Hopefully the woman wouldn't be too offended. Lily was being truthful. This town was honestly just completely absurd. And the people she'd met...well this man seemed to be more sane than the last, though it wasn't as if it were difficult to beat the man who referred to himself as "the Master."

She wondered if she ought to be more on her guard in this town, in case Voldemort had spies out, but her name wasn't incredibly uncommon. She would just have to keep her eyes peeled. "I'm Lily," she volunteered, sticking out a hand.

"Lily," he repeated. "I'm Rory." Feeling a little silly, he said, "...it's... on my name tag.

"Do you know," he said, "I have absolutely no idea how I came to be in this place? Or even how long I've really been here. There's this... gap... in my memory that's keeping me from figuring things out completely." He shrugged. "But other than that... it's a little strange, but not entirely bad. The people are nice. Well..." he thought of his patient in room 1D. "Most of the people are nice."

"Nice to meet you, Rory." She couldn't help but grin. He reminded her of some of her friends back in school. He was very fidgety. Fidgety wasn't even the proper word for it. She looked at his name tag. Rory Williams.

"That's curious. I've heard of other people who had that issue on the er." Bugger. What were they called. The computer people connecting things. "The things on the computer where people in town talk to one another?" Hopefully she wasn't going to sound like a complete loon. Especially since saying you were 30 years in the future wasn't exactly looked upon as a good thing. "I had a similar thing, but not identical. I remember everything, except one second I was at home, about to be married, and the next second I'm here. Though I don't appear to have lost any memories." Just the last 30 years, give or take.

He stared at her for a long moment. "That... sounds familiar," he said wryly. "I was about to be married to a girl who looked a lot like you... only in my case, a strange man jumped out of a cake during my stag party, told me he snogged my fiancee, then dragged me to the end of the universe..." he trailed off. "So... it was abduction, really, instead of spontaneous teleportation." He shrugged. "You've been out on the forums, then? I only just discovered them, myself. It's a pretty smart idea, actually, especially when strange things start happening. Like city-wide amnesia epidemics. You know."

Lily raised an eyebrow. To the end of the universe? "Yeah, seems sort of like an abduction on my end, too. Except I don't know quite who abducted me or why, but my fiance's back at home with all our friends and he's going to go completely bonkers if I just disappear." In fact, he would think something far more sinister had happened to her than being transported 30 years into the future. Lily was sure they'd think Voldemort or his Death Eaters had gotten her.

"Forums!" That was the word she'd forgotten. "Yeah, I poked around a bit. To be quite honest, it's a bit much for me. I'm still getting used to the technology." Lily didn't want to openly admit to being from the past, but she couldn't pretend to claim proficiency with the computers just yet. She'd get the hang of it sooner or later. "It is pretty clever. Though, I hope city-wide amnesia is as strange as it gets." She couldn't imagine much stranger without putting magic into the equation.

"I'm not sure," Rory said apologetically. "I don't think I've been in town long enough to know how strange things could be, here, even if I could remember." He bit his lip. "I hope you can get back to him soon," he said, absolutely sincere. Nothing was worse than being apart from someone you loved-- and not knowing when you might get back to that person.

From down the hall, he heard the Head Nurse call, "Williams!" and winced. "Oh no," he said softly, bracing himself for having to return to room 1D again. But his superior nodded and said, "You're shift's done. Go home before that crazy woman has us chain you to her bed."

Relieved, he nodded, then turned to Lily. "I- wait." He frowned. "You never finished what you came here to do, did you?"

Lily smiled back at him with an actual genuine smile. "Thank you." She meant it. It had only been a few days for her right now and she was trying not to imagine going too much longer without seeing him. It didn't help that from the time they were 11 she saw him every single day except during hols. Lily was trying very hard to convince herself that it was just like that and she'd get back to James or James would make his way to her very soon. "I hope you find your Amy." Rory was nice and most definitely did not deserve to be parted from someone he clearly felt so deeply about.

She shook her head. "No, I was thinking of getting a job around here, since I'm stuck in the meantime but...my lack of medical skills is sort of holding that back." She wondered if they had a helping sort of position, like sub-nurse or sub-intern or anything of the sort. Lily wouldn't use her magic if she could help it, but she really wanted to be useful if she was going to be stuck here.

...huh, Rory thought. That was strange. He hadn't been aware that his mind was wandering, but he thought she said something about Amy, and now he simply couldn't remember what it was ( ... )

Lily followed along as Rory walked with her to a different desk, continuing to tell her about this place, but when he said that people came from different times, her jaw dropped. "Wait. Other people have been taken from different times, too?" Thank Merlin, she wasn't going completely off her rocker. And...had he mentioned potions? "What sort of potions?" Lily was going to have to seek this girl out. Potions screamed witch. After all, who didn't just call it medicine if they weren't magically inclined. "So if I have some sort of...alternative healing method, the people at this other downstairs place would appreciate that? Even if it seems a bit...peculiar?" After all, the easiest thing to do would just be to magically heal them. Lily'd had more than enough practice on that throughout the years. She'd been thinking of going into healing before the war got into full swing. Healing or an Auror. She never could decide which.

He nodded. "I think so, yeah," he said. "I don't... I haven't really met anyone that's time-displaced yet-- well, I guess, except for you? But that's what they were saying downstairs. And as for the potions-- they weren't very specific, and-- I didn't ask." His smile said, 'Sorry, but you understand.' As he opened the door to the stairwell, he said, "They're as open-minded as you could wish them to be. And if they can use your skills, they won't hesitate to hire you."

"Lucky you, not being time displaced. It's bloody odd is what it is." And disconcerting and confusing most of all. Being in the past is one thing, but being in the future in the Muggle world was just distracting and nonsensical! "I certainly hope so. It'd be nice to do something useful." Lily followed through the stairwell, musing on the fact that the only useful thing she'd done since graduation was fight the war. That was useful, granted, but had less immediate results. Well, less positive immediate results. Lily had seen an awful lot of the negatives, including the deaths of people in the war and out of the war.

"Oh," Rory said, ironically. "It's funny... when you say it like that... I might be one of the most time-displaced people here, thanks to that strange, raggedy Doctor who came out of that cake. Him and his blue box..." He tries to look bitter, but he can't quite pull it off. "All right, I enjoyed it, at least a little. If I didn't, I like to think I would have demanded to go home."

They came to the bottom of the stairs, and across the landing was a door. "Here we are," he said, going ahead and opening the door for her. "And believe me, I know what you mean about needing to feel useful. If I didn't have anything to do with myself, well... it'd be a lot of empty hours to fill."

"Blue box?" Lily shrugged. She felt as if she were perpetually confused in this place, but at least Rory was nice, whereas the Master was just confusing.

"Thank you. I really appreciate this, Rory." She didn't know what she'd have done otherwise. It wasn't exactly as if she had many marketable skills. Sure, she'd be able to find work somewhere, but without any references? It would be very hard.
