There was a man walking in the high street, and he knew that its features--shops, cafes, pavement--were not unfamiliar, but they were all new to him. He knew, too, that he had had a past, that he was continuous with a man who had existed before (he knew, crucially, about before) and that he had somehow forgotten it.

He knew that he must hold on to this awareness, or he might cease to exist. Who was this man, walking along as though he were nobody?

An emptiness, an erasure. A forgetting.

And in the centre of all this absence, a seething, old menace. An exquisite force at once watching him and existing as him.

There was a man walking in the high street, and he had lost himself, but It had hold of him, and It knew him.
