The facts were these: Olive Snook had been in Aternaville for ten days. She had gone without a piece of pie for longer than that. She had moved quite far from the only home she'd known in Papen County and Ned still had no idea that she was there. In the months before they'd left, Olive had been allowed to help a little bit with cases. She had learned a great deal from Emerson Cod and how to be stealthy was one of them. It did help quite a bit that she was a small woman as it made it much easier to hide when there was the possibility of discovery.
For the past week, Olive had trailed Ned to and from his various destinations. Not all of them, she did have to eat and sleep and care for Pigby, but she knew how he was spending his time. The message boards she was able to access from her hotel room were also chock full of information about him. She had learned that he'd made friends, after a fashion, with Kimberly (the same girl who had also invited Olive to girls night out) and offered her a job in marketing. He had also offered a waitressing job to George, another girl on the boards. Olive was sure that if she waited any longer, he was going to give away every job in the place and there would be no room for her. She knew that if she wanted to be a waitress at Pie Hole the Second, she would need to let Ned know she was here.
It just so happened that Olive was waiting outside the building where Ned was working to set up shop. She'd left Pigby back at the hotel because she didn't want any snorting to give them away prematurely, and it was cold out. It was the middle of winter, and as it was Olive had to bundle herself into boots (no slippers this time), a long coat, a hat and gloves. She could have been mistaken for anyone really, but Ned would know right off who she was. Especially once she spoke. And so it happened, when he finally stepped out onto the sidewalk, she stepped out of the shadows and stood in front of him. She gave a nervous laugh and twiddled her fingers. "Surprise?"
