So this... was Canada.

Not bad, all things considered, though it felt so damned strange to be away from Cardiff. When he thought about it, Jack had been living in that little corner of the world for over a century and while he never felt a huge tie to the place, Jack had still stayed in Cardiff. He always said he stayed because of the Rift or the abundance of dark haired-light eyed men that Wales seemed to breed but the truth of the matter was that Jack liked Cardiff. Which was why it was so hard for him to understand how a native Welshman could pack up and move to Canada of all places.

Jack understood why he left. It didn't mean that Jack had to like it, but he understood why. Jack was not happy that Ianto had left him alone in Cardiff and yes, Jack had managed to lose himself in all manner of beings (so long as they were gorgeous enough, of course). But as time went on, Jack began to realise a horrifying fact: he missed Ianto. It wasn't just the sex, mind, though that was a large part of it. It was the coffee, it was the way Ianto seemed to know exactly what he needed before he could ask for it, it was how Ianto could talk Jack down from the ledge -- and mostly, it was how Jack actually listened to Ianto. Gwen had a certain pull over him, but there was something about the way Ianto could string words together that could actually make Jack back off of a hair-brained scheme.

That in and of itself was a miracle.

It had taken Jack a year to finally realise that he had to go after Ianto. All things considered, it was a relatively short time for Jack. The fact was he missed Ianto, and he needed the other man in his life. Jack wasn't sure which was the more frightening fact. Arriving in Aternaville, Jack wasn't surprised to learn that Ianto was running a cafe. Suited him.

There was a very important reason Jack went to the cafe first and not Ianto's residence. He didn't want to see if there was another person in Ianto's life. Jack sure as hell hadn't been faithful (but then again, when was he ever?), so why should he expect that Ianto had remained pure and chaste during their time apart? And if Ianto had someone, Jack could brush it off, say he was in town to check on him, and gracefully bow out. (In other words, return to Cardiff with his tail between his legs.)

Taking a deep breath, and feeling his stomach flop like it did when he first asked Ianto out on a proper date, Jack pushed the door of the cafe open and stepped inside. Instantly he was hit with a wall of coffee. God how he missed it.

And god how he missed the man behind the counter. Jack said nothing; didn't approach the bar.

Just... waited.
