God, this was going to be hard, wasn't it. Neil's heart was pounding as the stage cleared of everyone except him and Bod. Sad, slow twangs of music came from the pit and Neil knew it was time for the song to begin.

He'd performed this number twice already. It shouldn't be an issue. Except that the first time, he'd performed it with Troy, and the second time, he'd thought it was Troy. But now it was different. Now he had to knowingly inflict his bitter heartbreak on Bod, and after their not-quite-discussion after the show last night, everything felt so different. Different in a way that made him feel like this song would hurt worse than any professional should let it.

"You stand before me, and I barely know you. Is it so easy to leave?" Peter sang softly to Jason's turned back. "Where is the boy who said I was his soul mate? Where is the boy I believed?"

A few tentative steps forward, toward Bod... no, Jason, and Neil forced away his real-life concerns as best he could and continued. "Climbed an escape grown from seeds that you ( ... )

Maybe he hadn't spent enough time playing Jason. Maybe he hadn't built the rapport with the character that he felt that he needed to, in order to understand him properly. To sympathize. Because he hated Jason sometimes, and never more than in this scene. It helped when he realized how much Jason hated himself- hated the fact that he was conflicted about this, hated the fact that he felt something that he thought was so wrong. It helped, but only a little.

What was really easy was throwing his anger at the character he played into this scene. "Who are you to go and blame this all on me?" he hurled at Peter. "You're the one who went ahead and changed the rules!" He hated this scene. Hated watching pain and heartbreak bloom in Peter's expression. Hated watching as the daggers of his words hit home. "What?! You've found your way, and now it's all okay? Is it that simple then? Really? You're such a fool!He hated every angry word that came out of his mouth, hated the ironic snarl of every sarcastic syllable. "It's time to wake up, Peter! ( ... )

Neil really, really wanted this number-- probably this whole show-- to be over, so that he and Bod could just look back and have a laugh about this whole thing. It was making his heart constrict in ways he was sure couldn't be healthy.

"So much for our ever after..." he repeated, after what felt like a long time. "You can't be the same boy I followed. That I always followed. You've hurt me more than you know... all that I wanted was you. You were my tomorrow...." he clutched at his arm in uncertainty and despair.

"Peter," said Bod, not wanting to look at him, not wanting to see the devastation he'd inflicted, or was about to inflict. "Promise that you won't say anything to anyone." He stood there for a minute, wishing he hadn't had to do that. Wishing he could run after Peter and beg for his forgiveness. Briefly, his gaze came up, and he locked eyes with Neil across the stage... he turned and took long strides towards the wings stage right, grateful for the blackout, so that no one would be able to see the tears that prickled and burned his eyes.
