Adam wasn't sure he was ready to commit to a job here--there was his memory, for one thing, and there was the fact that once he did recover it entirely he should by rights go home, for another. But he'd grown bored and restless. He was accustomed to working very hard. And though he knew how to wait, and how to develop a routine for the quiet times in between crises, there had always been something to do, things to keep track of and people to manage. So he thought he'd give it a go, see if there was anyone hiring who might be able to use someone like him, albeit for some limited amount of time.

However, there was someone there already, reading the quaint little board on which jobs were posted. A woman. He smiled at her, then stood a little to the side, so he could still read the notices without intruding into her space.

"Oh, sorry," Lily smiled over at the man, shifting over a bit. There was a flyer about a job in a pet store. She didn't speak Chinese, but she'd see about it. Lily just needed something to occupy herself...

Adam shook his head gently. "It's quite all right." He was, after all, taller, and she had a sweet smile that smoothed over the inconvenience. "Do you see anything good?"

"Depends on what you think is good. Pet shop, book store." Lily shrugged. "I wish I even knew what I wanted to do." She smiled over at the man. "I'm Lily Potter. I don't think we've met."

Adam reached out his hand. "Adam Carter. No, I don't think we have."

Neither pet shop nor book store sounded especially suited to his particular talents. Or disposition. In fact, they sounded deadly dull.

"Pleasure," she replied, shaking his hand. "How about you? Anything particularly catching your fancy?" Lily hadn't really been one of those kids who thought of what she wanted to do with her life. Get through the war, check. She wanted to be a mum, but that wasn't a full-time thing, when your son is grown.

He read more notices, not feeling particularly hopeful. But then one listing caught his eye. "Oh, here's one. 'Emergency services: ambulance driver.' Not exactly my line of work, as I'm given to understand it, but it seems a pretty funky way to make a living, don't you think?"

"Emergency services. That sounds exciting. So an ambulance driver is close to your line of work? What line of work is that?" Lily smirked. It certainly sounded exciting enough, but she'd prefer apparating.

Adam paused. He wasn't sure how much he could tell. "There was driving, but no ambulances if all went well. Still, I don't think anything could be further from suited to me than selling small, furry animals or lurid novels. I don't think you need to know me very well to see that that's so."

Lily laughed. "No, you don't seem like a novel or animal seller right off the bat, but I suppose you can't tell everything from first impressions." The redhead turned back to the board, momentarily, contemplating the rest of the ads. "You should go for the ambulance driver if you want it."

"You won't compete with me for it?" Adam tore a little tab of information from the notice. "It isn't your life's ambition to drive an ambulance in a country village?"

"Do you want some competition?" Lily asked, raising an eyebrow. "Oh, how did you know? My secret ambition to drive an ambulance in a country village is no longer a secret!"

"Nothing like some healthy competition to improve the quality of the effort. We may have to have a race." Adam made a serious face as he pocketed the slip of paper.

Lily nodded solemnly, trying desperately to hide a small smile. "You'd probably want to get off the road should I be in that race." She'd gotten her license when she turned 16 (just to prove to Petunia that she could) but Lily had not driven since then. Besides the fact that cars were completely different now from when they were in the 70s.

"Not much for driving then." Adam gestured toward the board. "Then which will you go for, the quick beat of a tiny heart, or the happy fiction of the written word?"

"Not terribly much. I prefer other methods of transportation." Apparition more than brooms, though she was certain that her son would prefer the latter. "Very poetic. I might try the pet store. Something at least a bit engaging."
