By the side of the bakery, in downtown Aternaville, a teenage girl in a crouched position slowly shimmered into being. She was sitting with her arms wrapped to her sides with heavy chains, knees pulled to her chest; her hair was lank and unwashed, and she wore a worn, old nightgown several sizes too small. She cringed from a blow that hadn't come yet.
Wendy opened her eyes to see why the beating didn't come, and for a moment she couldn't take in what she saw. A town? In the asylum?Impossible. But there it was.
Wendy looked from side to side, but she saw no one she recognised. Her family wasn't here, and neither were any of the doctors. She tried to stand, but her arms were still bound, and she lost her balance and fell heavily to one side. Why would something or someone help her escape but leave her chained? She curled up in a ball and began to cry, immeasurably upset and tired.
