Clarice couldn't settle. She knew that what she'd seen the week before wasn't real. At least... she was pretty certain of it. But all the progress she'd made working on her abilities had come to a screeching halt. Every time she went to Blink so much as a toothpick, all she could see was everything - her friends, her parents, her entire world - shattered, obliterated in a single flash of power. And all that fear she had felt, all that terror of herself and what she could do, it all came rushing back.
Now she sat huddled in a booth near the back of the pancake house, legs tucked up underneath her. Safina was tied to a pole outside with a dish of water; they'd been walking aimlessly for quite a while and the little black puppy was only too happy for a break. Clarice had a dish of chocolate chip pancakes in front of her, but she only poked at them, pushing them around on the plate as they grew soggy.
