Lulu was all set for playing basketball with Richie and whoever else showed up. She was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Perfect for the weather and easy enough to move around in. At least something would be on her side for the game since height would definitely not. She left her bag with her phone and other stuff on the bench.
"Hi, Richie!" she grinned brightly, ponytail swishing.
Richie had on shorts too--long shorts, as short shorts didn't really exist in the 50s. After a long struggle with himself, he had managed to wear a T-shirt, though he still felt a little as if he were in his underwear. T-shirts weren't worn as the only shirt in the time he'd come from.
"Hi, Lulu!" Richie said, smiling at the sight of her hairstyle. All the girls wore ponytails in the 50s. "Your hair looks nice."
She grinned at him. "Thanks. I figured it's good for the basketball. I mean. I haven't played much except in gym class." And though Lulu wasn't completely un-athletic, she tended to be picked toward the end in gym class. It was some sort of combination of her snarkiness and short stature.
"Sure," Richie said. "It's funny--practically every girl wears her hair like that back home." He smiled warmly when Lulu said she hadn't played much. "That's okay. Anything you don't remember, we can go over again. Or we can just play Horse."
"Really? I don't know. I usually like to let it down or whatever, but sometimes," she shrugged, smiling. "Well if it's just you and me I'm sure you'd win. You've got like. Half a foot on me. Horse. Which one is that?"
"I guess it's a trend," Richie said with a grin. "Oh, well...Horse is when one person tries to make a basket, and if they make it, the other person has to make a basket from the same place. If they don't, they get a letter. H. Whoever spells Horse by missing the most baskets loses." He smiled. "Of course, I'm so out of practice, we might be playing for a really long time."
"Guess so! Hm. That seems like a good plan. We might, though. Either you'll win really quickly or we'll both suck." Lulu tilted her head slightly, grinning.
Richie nodded. "Yeah, sure!" He took a shot from the free-throw line and missed. Then he passed the ball gently to Lulu. "You can try anywhere on the court."
Lulu caught the ball and walked it up a few steps and took one large step to the left. She raised her eyebrows with a grin toward Richie and shot the ball. Shockingly, it went in. "Beginner's luck?"
Richie applauded Lulu, and he shook his head, smiling. "No such thing. You didn't tell me you were good at basketball, Lulu!" He said it playfully as he got the ball.
He took a shot from where Lulu had shot, and it bounced off the back of the rim. Richie groaned, falling to his knees in mock agony. "H!"
Lulu laughed. "You're not just letting me win, are you?" She took the ball back and walked to the foul line where Richie had been. "Lucky played basketball a lot and I mostly watched." She shot the ball and missed epically. "Sure there's no such thing as beginners luck?"
"Not at all!" Richie said. "I believe in playing fair and square." And he did, too. "Well, you must've picked up some stuff by watching." Richie chuckled at Lulu's question after her miss. "Well. Maybe there is."
He took the ball and moved in close to the basket so that he could try another layup. He made this one. "Oh good. I was beginning to wonder if I'd lost my touch."
"Good," Lulu grinned. She didn't like when people let her win because she was a girl. Or short. Or in the case of her brothers, the youngest. "Yeah. Probably," she laughed.
"Nice shot," Lulu said, as she took the ball. She attempted to do the same thing Richie did but failed pretty spectacularly. "That's an H for me, then?"
Richie wouldn't have let Lulu win. Unless she really really wanted to. He was a bit of a sucker for chivalry and all that. He laughed at Lulu's laughter, nodding in response.
"Thanks!" Richie said with a smile...a smile that he hid with one hand at Lulu's...unfortunate attempt. Making his expression serious, he nodded, lowering his hand. "Yup. So both of us have H." He took a shot from the free-throw line and missed.
