Ever since trying to talk to Billy (learning he was Dr. Horrible in the process) Kaylee had been in a decidedly un-Kaylee-like funk. Yes, she went to work and did what needed to be done, but she didn't enjoy it as much as usual. It was like a spark had gone out in her, and she wasn't quite sure how to get it back.

In the meantime, though, alcohol was always a good option.

After a dinner that she didn't ever really remember eating, Kaylee trudged through the snow to the bar that she'd passed many times, but hadn't ever entered.

"Somethin' strong," she sighed, sitting on a barstool and leaning her elbow on the counter, resting her head on her hand. "Please."

Owen wasn't new to seeing girls entering the bar alone and despondent. After a few drinks, they typically walked out on the arm of some boy, worries forgotten. This one, though...Owen got something different.

Without a word, he poured her a glass of Irish Whiskey, sliding it over before speaking. "You alright?" There was an actual look of concern to his normal smirk, something worried as she began to drink.

Kaylee grabbed the drink, taking a good gulp of it before looking up at the bartender.

"Ain't nothing," she shrugged, shaking her head. "Jus' havin' a bad day. Well, week, I guess."

That was the very least of it. Kaylee wasn't sure she'd ever felt as dejected as this- even Simon's stupidity had left her with hope, at times. Billy had wanted to shut her out completely, and though Kaylee wasn't about to let him do that, she didn't know how to start talking to him again.

"I have time." He shot her a silly grin and ducked his head a bit to try and re-capture her eyes. "You know, I wish I still had my diploma so I could hang it up behind the bar -- I am a certified psychologist, you know."

She tried to return the grin, almost succeeding. She wasn't all that thrilled at the prospect of a psychologist, though.

"Doctors seem to be the problem," Kaylee sighed, taking another sip of the whiskey- it was strong, but she'd made stronger with her intra-engine fermentation setup on Serenity.

"Doctors who is also swai-looking boys. Who turn out to be 愚笨的猪," she scowled.

Owen blinked at her for a moment because he didn't understand a word of that. Well, the bit about doctors, of course. He'd gotten enough grief for what he did during that dark period of his life.

"Now why would a boy give up a pretty face like that?" Despite what it ought to have sounded like, coming from a bartender who ought to have been flattering her, Owen was being completely serious, head tilted with a look of muted concern.

Kaylee frowned, looking up at Owen with a dejected look on her face.

"Iffen you can explain that, you best tell me," she sighed. "Everything was going so well- he was so sweet, and we danced, and he kissed me- he was a good kisser! And now, I think he hates me. Or he's trying to, anyhow. Still don't think he's being truthsome with me."

That was the crux of the matter- Billy had lied to her, and had done everything in his power to hurt Kaylee with his words, but she still didn't understand why.

"Hmph." Owen pursed his lips, brow wrinkled in concentration as he considered the possibilities. It was entirely possible that this girl had done something to make the boy in question angry, though Owen was having trouble imagining that. What she was saying resonated with him in the worst way because of how familiar it all was to him now.

"Maybe he just got scared."

Taking another drink, Kaylee thought this over for a moment, then shook her head.

"No, he started out scared. Had to practically drag him places- but we had fun! And he bought me a Christmas present-" Kaylee thought of the amazing flower Billy had gotten her, currently sitting on her bedside table.

"When he asked me to the ball, I thought it was goin' well, y'know? An' then out of nowhere, he ran off! And when I went to see him-" Kaylee shook her head, trying to stave off the tears that had been close to the surface for days. Instead, she took another gulp of whiskey, grimacing a bit.

Owen scoffed, shaking his head in slow disbelief as he topped off her whiskey. "You girls...you think you're the only ones who get emotional." Bitter words, but spoken calmly -- almost soothingly. It pained Owen to see her upset.

He continued pressing gently for answers, ready to back off before she could shut him out. It wouldn't do either of them good if she ran out. "What happened when you went to see him?"

Kaylee shook her head, unable to speak for a moment. She'd gone through it in her head a million times, but still hadn't been able to make much sense of anything.

"It wasn't Billy," she sighed, shaking her head. "At least, that was what he said. Been lyin' to me from the start, I guess."

"Poor thing." Girl like this, you should never lie to her. Lying was complicated. One of the reasons having a healthy relationship at Torchwood was out of the question. It was always --

"Hang on. Billy?" As in... "As in, clumsy Tetris champion, can't-say-two-proper-words-to-a-girl, Billy?"

"You know Billy?" Kaylee asked, completely thrown off by the bartender's question. "He said he didn't have any friends here, really. Prob'ly that was lies too, though," she muttered, taking another swig of her whiskey, which was nearly half-gone by now.

Owen let out a heavy breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding, honestly looking shocked for the matter. "Well, I wouldn't call us friends..." Or at least, he didn't think Billy would.

Motioning to ask her if she wanted a refill, Owen continued. "What did he lie to you about? I mean, he was a very...private...individual, but I never saw him being the kind to hurt you on purpose."

Kaylee nodded at the bartender, more than ready for more alcohol.

"He jus-" Kaylee sighed, not really knowing how to explain what had happened.

"He weren't him," she cried out, still frustrated over everything. "He kept saying that Billy wasn't real, that 'Dr. Horrible' or whoever was really him, but I know that just can't be true! He was so sweet, and-" Kaylee's eyes filled with tears again, as they seemed to when she thought too much about what had happened.

"He just kept sayin' these awful things."

"Doctor -- oh..." The last syllable faded off something into perplexed silence. Well then. Color him three different shades of surprised. Of course, now everything made sense. The avoidance, the vagueness about his life.

"You serious?" Owen shot her another disbelieving look. "We are talking about the same -- " But Kaylee was crying, and Owen couldn't have that. He pulled another glass from beneath the table, this time filling it with tequila. Covering her hand with his momentarily, he gave it a worried squeeze. "Did he hurt you?"
