One of the coffee shop's usual customers came through the door. Of course, Jack could get all the coffee he wanted for free at home, but it never hurt to support your local coffee shop. When he stepped inside, he smiled when he saw Ianto on one side of the counter and River on the other. The guy with her, Jack didn't recognize. Oh, he was getting a good look over and not for the usual reasons.

Think of Jack as another of River's big brothers.

He kept his smile friendly when he stepped up to the counter. "What does a man have to do to get some service around here?"

Still holding his coffee cup protectively in one hand, Matt stepped to the side as a newcomer walked up to the counter. He smiled one of those smiles you gave people you passed on the street whenever you happened to meet their eye -- just a "Hey, I'm not going to beat you up or anything, so please return the favor" awkward expressions that almost looked pained.

It was always a moment of pleasure for Ianto when someone drank his coffee for the first time. "And thus another link is forged in my benevolent coffee empire," he quipped, accent making the words lilt on his tongue. "River, can I get you anything while Matt has his coffee orgasm?"

And then the Captain walked in. Ianto's smile went a little wider at that and he shrugged, playing at nonchalance. "Oh, I don't know. Depends on the type of service. What can I get you, strange man?"

Matt thought about protesting the phrase "coffee orgasm," but decided it wasn't worth it. Instead he just took another pleased drink. Although he did notice the implication in Ianto's question for the new guy...

River lifted a hand, twiddling her fingers in "hello" at Jack's entrance.

"Thanks Ianto. 'm settled." She could always drop by his house unannounced for some of his famously delicious teas.

Jack's grin changed for Ianto as he leaned on the counter in front of him. Strange man. Yes, he could be that from time to time. "Well, King of Coffee, I would like a cup of coffee." That much he knew was obvious. "Why don't you surprise me?"

His eyes shifted to the young man, the smile never wavering. And then beyond him to River. He bowed gracefully to her.

A surprise. Ianto spent a moment biting his lip gently and thinking, then nodded once and pushed away from the counter. He had an idea for Jack.

"Ah, we're a rude bunch. Jack, that's Matt Farell, only recently a resident. He had been going on about wonderful coffee from a convenience store and River, saint that she is, went about correcting Matt's misconceptions. Matt, this is Captain Jack Harkness who is currently being made a cinnamon machiato, because I think it suits him today."

Matt grinned, ducking his head as his convenience store coffee love was advertised yet again. He nodded up at Jack, "Hi, nice to meet you." His left hand occupied by the lovely cup of coffee, he went through the quick and obviously familiar routine of shifting his weight onto his good leg, letting go of the cane for a moment -- leaving it balanced against the counter -- and held out his hand.

(( Excuse my inconsistences re: which hand he uses for the cane, haha. It'll be the right hand from now on, because I googled it and figured out the way it should be~ ))

( lmao no problem )

Obvious focus was shifted to Matt's leg. The malicious child in River was tempted to give it a little kick, or perhaps just a mischievous nudge with a toe. Still she had enough manners to restrain herself.

"Jack is Captain-like without being captain-like," she observed, curtsying in response to his bow.

Jack took the hand that was offered to him and shook it in his own. "Nice to meet you as well, Matt. No one makes coffee quite as well as our Ianto." Jack's eyes ticked back to Ianto and he winked.

"I am a captain without a ship. Where are you from, Matt?" He pulled his hand away and let it rest at his side.

Ianto grinned at the wink and wandered back to place a cup before Jack. He then leaned against the counter, on his elbows, and clasped his hands in front of himself. Definitely the best place to work, at least for him.

"Yeah, it's amazingly good," Matt agreed, raising his cup of coffee in a salute directed at Ianto. "I'm from, um, Jersey, but I was in New York since the summer. But, really, Jersey." He placed his now free hand back on the cane and stepped back from the counter a step or two, so as to definitely not disclude River in any conversation. "And you? Where are you from, Jack?"

River slipped in from the background, watching the two interact. Jack was suspicious but was doing a good job of not displaying it. Snorting a little at Matt's question, River muttered something under a breath, eyes sliding from Jack to Ianto. "Not from a where. But a when."

Matt blinked. First River's strange comment about not having a choice and now... what? He hadn't met any of the stranger citizens of the town yet, and -- "Huh?" He raised his eyebrows, his dark eyes wide and confused.

Jack tilted his head toward River and then looked at Matt. "She's right. I'm from when. Far into the future."

He wasn't sure if Matt was really going to believe him.

Matt's mouth dropped open and he narrowed his eyes slightly, tilting his head to the side. "What? I... What?"
