It felt strange to have to knock on the door to someplace that used to be home. So wrapped up in her own fixings, River had nearly forgotten the feeling of being welcomed somewhere. She'd missed him. Unreasonably so. But on the positive her thoughts were centered, re-ordered to comfortably rest on a plateau of silence.
She had managed remarkably well, even lacking the stabilizers that came with the constant floods of white noise interspersed with garbled speech. What she could not manage was the sense of disconnect and a sudden lack of trust in people. (There was a time when friends had come so easily.)
When he invited her back, asked for her specifically in his journal, River felt the swell of elation -- like things could get back to normal. She was ready to see with all six senses again.
