Brennan was seated at the counter of the restaurant drinking her coffee and reading the morning paper. It wasn't the diner back home, but they did have a decent breakfast menu and cup of coffee.

Booth had been here moments earlier but was now off cleaning things up at the sheriff's office (his office she supposed she should call it now). She had decided to take a couple more days to settle back in before returning to work at the morgue. That is if Hawk would even take her back.

She heard the front door bell and glanced over as a good-looking (rugged, her mind supplied) man walked through the door and began taking stock of the place. She knew she had yet to meet everyone in the small town, but she was sure she hadn't seen him around before. You would have remembered him that's for sure, she thought as she looked back down at her paper and then frowned slightly as an uncharacteristic and annoying pang of guilt ran through her.

The place weren't bustlin', but it sure weren't empty, either, James noted as he glanced around the yellowy-lit diner. Coupla folks at the counter, few waitstaff bustlin' around in the dinin' area and the kitchen, and some people scattered 'bout at the chipped tiled tables. After pausing in the entryway, he nodded in response to a waitress who caught his eye and gestured at the counter ( ... )

She might have been intently reading all the important news that filled all two pages of the Aternaville Times, but Brennan still noticed the attractive stranger take a seat next to her and order his cheeseburger. Wait, his cheeseburger?

"I don't think that is the best nutritional option to begin your day" she said without looking up from her paper.

Tappin' his fingers on the countertop, James slowly tilted his head and turned toward the brunette to his left. He didn't bother ta stop the grin spreading across his face. "Yeah? Last I heard, it's got at least five a the food groups. Sounds pretty damn nutrious ta me."

Kate had always felt a sense of comfort from restaurants that reminded her of her mother's diner. Years of sitting at the counter after school and doing her homework while her mother served regulars and families passing through on road-trips and truckers were forever burned into her memory, and it was this reason alone that had caused her to walk into the burger place ( ... )

As James turned ta look at the woman on his left, another brunette caught his attention -- a brunette he coulda sworn he recognized. Keepin' one eye on the newspaper readin' woman, James spun a little more in his seat, narrowin' his eyes and tryin' to get a good look at who he hoped goddamn wasn't Kate Austen.

Kate wasn't about to look in his direction - not if she could help it, at least. But in her haste to make it out the door, she collided with a busboy, who proceeded to drop the tray of dirty dishes he was holding. In the loud crash that followed, she dropped to her knees, apologizing softly as she attempted to help him pick up broken pieces of ceramic. So much for not drawing attention to herself.

James shook his head incredulously, turning fully on the leather stool to face the stooping Kate, clapping his hands on his jean-clad knees.

"What the hell, Kate," he said. It weren't a question. He furrowed his brows, tryin' ta look at least a little angry, but really the man just looked confused, as if he were preparin' to be hurt something awful.
