..true. It's become so..I don't know what the word is, but..our freedom is being taken away. :/ We can't even share and enjoy things with each other. It's become such a greedy, money-hungry society. Anyone with a brain knows no one making vids using copyrighted material on YT is making any money off of it. I just bought a video on John a few days ago that I hoped to upload to YT and share with others. I never, ever stop to think about people downloading anything I upload, to be honest. I'm more than happy to share what I've got for others' enjoyment. If people were hurting others due to it or unfairly profiting off of it, I would be very upset..but I know it's not possible or permissible. So many Beatle fans out there are being hit very hard with this EMI stuff..and it's become rather petty and tragic at the same time..and now to hear that downloads will be monitored..it's horrible. I was going through my faves on my channel to make sure I had everything downloaded, anyway. Now I'm gonna have to make sure I do it all before this date. I lost a good ten or so vids..most due to copyright issues that blocked the video from view. You never stop to think about it. It's always other countries that are getting blocked. Well..now it's hitting home and it hurts. I can no longer see a vid that a friend had done for me, for example..due to all the riff-raff. Insane..and music on top of it? It's sad..and it's pretty sad when even a hosting site like Photobucket is flagging copyrighted vids. I got away with putting one of mine up, but another friend didn't. It got pulled for copyright..just to host it? It's getting too paranoid..and pretty soon the internet will be so policed, it won't be enjoyable, anymore. :*(
You summed it up perfectly. It's greed, plain and simple. Companies don't want people enjoying stuff without having to pay for it, and they're cracking down on everyone who watches/shares/downloads stuff. Like I said, there are pirates, but there are others who just want to enjoy what's out there, simply because it's accessible. And what if some of us don't have the money to buy soundtracks? I admit, that's the reason why I do download music. I download it so I can listen to it either on my computer, or on my phone when I'm out and about. That's all. Sure, I could buy the albums, but what's the point of that when I want only one or two tracks?
True, honey. That's the problem. I can't tell you how many times I hear something and I say I want that..and it's just one song. Most of the time, you don't want to buy the whole album..unless, of course, it's someone you know..like one of the boys or other artists you've grown up with. I have a station here..really cool..plays what they call "world class rock". They combine the classics from the past with new music from the present.. Some of this new stuff is pretty good, but I've never heard of these artists. I just want the one song they came out with. I was thinking, "No problem..Youtube.."..well..now it's a problem, or it will be..and it's terribly unfair. :( If it wasn't for the generosity of a Youtuber, I wouldn't have snagged over a hundred Beatle tunes for my mp3 player until I could buy the Mono boxed set. Now I can't even pass on the love by uploading the set for anyone else. It's sad when people just want to share with each other and can't.
If it's pretty much the whole album I like, then I'll be happy to buy it, but if it's just one song, why should I spend money on an album when I'm only going to want one song off it? But nooo. It's all about "supporting the artist and buying their work" *snort* Good grief. I'll bet half the artists out there aren't even aware of what's going on, and if they are, I'm sure they probably don't mind. If they did, they'd speak up and say something, right?
Actually, to be completely honest, I was very much of that mindset. I refused to download stuff. I wanted to support the artist by buying their material. I used to tell my nieces and nephews that when they'd tell me they just go and get stuff off the internet. Then I fell into using Limewire because I wanted to have a compilation of songs I loved that I couldn't find in any store..and my sister had the capability at the time, whereas I didn't, so she'd make up a CD or two for me. Then I got high speed internet (finally)..and joined YT..and saw someone uploaded the mono boxed set, and I knew I wanted to get it one day, myself..but I wasn't about to miss out on the music until then, so I took advantage of the uploads. I'm all for supporting the artist. I very strongly believe in that..but, at the same time, I'm being an opportunist. Yes, I recognize the conflict there..even the hypocrisy, if you will. Artist's deserve to have their work purchased. That's part of how they make their money..and if I were an artist, I'd be upset if people where downloading my stuff for free. And yes..most definitely, artists have raised Caine over this, hon'. Remember that whole thing with..I forget the name of it..but..maybe it was just in America..there was a big thing that happened with one of the earlier sites that people were using to download music for free..and artists went to court over it and sued..I think it was Napster, now that I think about it. Well..I don't blame them, really... I actually understand it. Put yourself in their shoes. But that said, I've also read..at least as of "now"..that artists no longer make their money exclusively by selling records, anymore (for obvious reasons, I suppose). They have to go out and tour..so..that's what they do. I guess, now that I think about it..that's why the prices can be so ridiculously high to see them in concert. Maybe they figure half their fan base is illegally downloading their music, so they have to up the price of a ticket to compensate. I wouldn't be surprised. So when you think about it, it's more than just about copyright issues when you get someone's music for free; it's about the artist's livelihood being "stolen"..but even as I say that, I see the greed in it..but that's only because it's accessible to me/us..and you figure because it's out there, anyway..and YOU didn't pirate it or whatever, what's the harm?..meanwhile, didn't I just allude to uploading the boxed set if I could? It's a very conflicting thing in my own head..all this.. If it wasn't available at all, you'd have no choice NOT to have it..but the problem is, we've gotten so used to having the liberty of downloads, that even if it's "right" that they be taken away, it's a hard blow to deal with and something we'll have to get used to.
You've got a very good point, and that's fair enough. I can certainly see where you're coming from. And if I had the money, I'd be more willing to go out and buy albums. But that's the rub. I live off government benefits, and at the moment, I can't look for work because my leg is giving me buggery. And I really don't have the money to be buying albums left, right and center. That's another reason why I get my music online, because I simply just can't afford to buy full albums.
..yeah..and looking at it from your perspective, you're going to be an opportunist, and that makes sense, too, right? If you can't afford to buy albums, should you deprive yourself of the music you love if it's freely available to you?I mean.. Case in point: I love video editing..but I wasn't about to spend $600.00 on Sony Vegas Pro. Why should I when someone was generous enough to provide me with the link on YT for free? I used to go through such drama thinking I was a bad person and all..and I had a talk with Astrid and it was basically, "No. You're not the one putting it out there. What are you worried about? I do it all the time." I understand both sides..believe me. I very much feel for the artist..but I feel for the rest of us who want to take advantage of what's out there, too. It's like someone has given you the keys to the candy shop..and you're free to walk in and grab anything you want. You're not stealing it 'cause someone has made it available to you and has said, "it's alright"..never mind that they're NOT the "owners" of that material. Just the fact they put it out there and waved it like a red flag in front of you..whether you went looking for it or not..made it seem okay..even if it technically wasn't..but now that freedom is being ripped away...they're locking the door. No more candy. :/
