I must say, I really love one of the counselors at work. Bea is the coolest: she knows tons of stuff and is always showing me little secrets (like today's lesson: finding out what kind of veteran's benefits a student has on SGASTDN) and asking if I want free movie passes. Last week, I asked about getting a loan for a computer. She immediately had me do the paperwork and pushed it through, so I didn't have to wait like everyone else--which I didn't expect. On Thursday, she put a hold on my file so the money wouldn't be sent to my father's address but told me to let her know it was on there in a few days so she could take it back off, which I did today and went to get my check from cashiering.
Now I have a check and a dream computer sparkling away in my mind: an Alienware laptop. Any of my techie friends should be pissing themselves right now. :D I'll cash the check tomorrow and put in the order. I think. It'll cost me over two thousand dollars, doubling my debt, but for an Alienware laptop, I'd say it's worth it. Mm, laptop. I can nearly taste its prettiness now.
Second, I was reading my blog feeds tonight and found that once again there are odd ties between people who I know...or know of, in this case.
One of my favorite authors,
Diane Duane also has a
LiveJournal mirror of her blog.
Okay, that's all well and good, but not very interesting, you say. Well, it turns out she has some interesting people in her friends list.
Patrick Nielsen Hayden, for instance, an editor at Tor Books (publishers of two of my other favorite authors, Orson Scott Card and Robert Jordan) whose wife "starred" in
this entry of mine about narcolepsy drugs.
Still not enough, I know. In that case,
cayora has been a fan of
Ursula Vernon for quite a while. Tonight, I learned that Ursula Vernon and Diane Duane have each other friended, and Ursula Vernon even did
art in Duane's honor. Yes, I let Cai know about it the moment I realized
who was who in those comments--Ursula Vernon's icon is rather unforgettable.
So that's my squee for today.
And I thought it was weird that Tori Amos mentions Neil Gaiman in most of her albums, while he writes of staying at her house as he was writing American Gods...and so on.
