Yesterday's Austin American-Statesman ran an article about Texas Monthly's #1 choice,
Snow's BBQ in Lexington. Lexington is small town about halfway between Austin and College Station, but it's not on a major road and it's unlikely that you'd encounter the town or restaurant unless you went there on purpose. Texans love their BBQ, and the news of a great previously-unknown restaurant has led to a huge spike in business at Snow's. The place is open only on Saturdays, from 8 AM until they run out of meat. Before the article, that was noon. Since, they often run out before 9 AM. If business doesn't slack off soon, the owner and staff are considering closing the place.
The Texas Monthly list seems interested in calling attention to new and lesser-known places. One of the Austin choices,
Lambert's Barbecue, serves excellent food in a nice atmosphere, but when I dined there I found too much steak and seafood on the menu to consider it a true BBQ restaurant. Austin's beloved
Iron Works didn't make the list at all, and nearby favorite
The Salt Lick was relegated to honorable mention status. But all the restaurants I've visited on the Top 50 list (
Lambert's in Austin,
Austin's in Eagle Lake,
Vincek's in East Bernard,
Cooper's in Llano,
Smitty's in Lockhart, and
City Market in Luling) are truly excellent, so their standards remain high.
