I recently visited two more of the 50 Best BBQ Joints in Texas from
the Texas Monthly list.
Mann's Smokehouse in north Austin is relatively close to my work. I ate there with a friend for lunch. We found a large selection of well-prepared meats, a extensive set of delicious side dishes, and a friendly staff. Their brisket was exceptional, and the ribs were mouth-wateringly good. I plan to return.
Last weekend I went with a larger group for Saturday dinner at Opie's Barbecue in Spicewood. It's about a 40 minute drive from central Austin. I thought the pork ribs were outstanding, the brisket was good, and the jalapeno sausage was not particularly spicy or interesting. The side item selection was small, but I had the cole slaw and beans, which both were fine. I'd certainly eat there again if I was in the area, but I didn't find the place exceptional enough to warrant a special trip just for a meal.
