ApolloCon 2008

I had a nice time at ApolloCon in Houston last weekend. It was fun to get away for a few days to hang out with friends I don't see that often, talk about sf books and movies, and eat out at nice restaurants. The major guests were all friendly and accessible.

My programming schedule included four items, which led me to be on panels with three of the major guests. The Intro to Fandom panel on Saturday went particulary well; there were many people in the audience new to conventions and fandom who appreciated the information and asked questions. The SF Canon panel was fun; despite starting way back at Gilgamesh, we managed to recommend books up through the 1950s. Reviewing the best sf movies and tv of the past year was fun, although tastes varied wildly among the panel.

Since I was last year's Fan Guest, I was asked to interview Anne Murphy, the current Fan Guest. Her accomplishments in fandom and the sf community are so varied that we only got to scratch the surface in the allocated hour.

I arrived on Friday and stayed through Monday afternoon, and was glad I stayed the extra day. I enjoyed the Dead Dog party on Sunday night. It was a good chance to visit with the friendly con committee, who were busy earlier in the weekend running the convention. I've made it to every ApolloCon so far, and plan to return next year.
