Breaking the fall, by rose or thorn

Nov 19, 2011 20:15

Lately my fandom time has been ~90% Being Erica, and I've been meaning to make a little note of what else I'm watching/plan to be watching.  Just 'cuz it feels like I should, and because it will either give me a lift or depress me more that it's all I'll be left with ...  Also hoping I'm forgetting some.

ETA: AKA= LJ broke my damn cuts three times in a row.  If it was just Rich Text, fine, stupid, but fine.  But when I'm coding by hand I expect it to stick.  This is symptomatic.  I am currently in hate with everything, show and fandom.  Except the tiny knot of BE fandom that is getting me through the last season without falling apart.

  • Once Upon a Time - Apart from calling it "Once & Again" with alarming frequency, it's probably my favourite show. I'm mostly over at moon_blitz's chatting about it, because she rocks.  It's fun and light and has tendrils in the dark and philosophical - that and a giant cast make it a bit like Stargate in how much room there is to play.  Alas, I haven't found my niche in the fandom, and may give up before I do. I can't capslock and squee and muse unless I know I *could* also be analyzing every scene, every camera angle and possible set of motivation.  And too many of my encounters so far have been limp, dull, or irritatingly passive aggressive.  I'm not in fandom for that sh!t, thanks.  Broadcast Networks: this is why I avoid you.
  • Grimm - In episode 1 I greatly enjoyed the lighting/colouring, and Mr. Big Bad.  Subsequently, I have greatly enjoyed Mr. Big Bad.  I'm vaguely curious about the premise and nothing about the show is actually offensively bad, so I continue to watch.  But mostly for Mr. Big Bad.  And Adama, but by this point he's typecast up the nostril.  I also forgot to watch it last night.
  • Sanctuary - Yeah, I"m watching for Tesla.  I've always wished I could like this show more..  I don't know what else to say about it, (though clearly I've managed)  i'm doing the sanctuary_santa again with no regrets: not only have I received wicked awesome stuff the past two years, but I also really enjoy writing gifts.  If nothing else, the show is a sponge for anything you might want to push into it or wring out of it, and I'm atypically happy with what I've managed to produce.  Probably means I should throw myself in whole hog and I"d be happy all the time.  Or not.
  • House - I'm watching again. Making it twice I've quit for a least half a season and then been roped back in.  The only things I regret are missing Tamblyn.  I really like Parks, or whatever her name is.  Actually I LOVE her, I think she's the coolest Duckling ever.  When it was her and the prison chick I thought the show was gold.  Now they're trying to turn Prison Chick into Thirteen 2.0 and Cameron 3.0 and that's not cool.  Chase/Prison Chick are not cool.  Taub and the doubled babies is only a little cool.  Chase's increasingly fuck-all attitude: a bit cool.  Foreman as The Man - ...  Okay, I really like it and him and House colluding to steal Wilson's tickets makes it all worth it.
  • The Pretender - Not current, I know, but after a frustrating day I found out they actually have it up, in good quality, on Hulu. WHO KNEW?!?  I haven't seen the thing in a decade, and by the end there it was literally cracking up into absurdity and the tropes were tripping over one another, so apparently I forgot just how wicked awesome it used to be, with Sydney's eternally paternal bent, Miss Parker as a cold-blooded chimney in short skirts, Jarod as deus ex machina with a Miss Parker obsession tying it all together...  Not to mention the weekly reminder to take a close look at the little things in life we take for granted, like Pez, and fabricated imitation canine feces - or, because that doesn't fit on the package: "fake dog poop."
  • Terra Nova - I'm watching it because my mum does, though since she keeps forgetting it's on I'm guessing we'll stop soon.  It and me don't get along well, if you catch my drift.
  • Psych/Covert Affairs - I tend to catch these eventually, and enjoy them both, but my investment level is low.  Syndication fodder.
  • Warehouse 13 / Eureka - W13 I'm really looking forwards to.  It's a hard world to fandom in, but amazing to watch - the continued tendency to specifically ANTI SHIP their characters is likely a main source of success.  Eureka...  IDEK.  I like half of it, I hate half of it, vastly curious about the last season and suspect the holiday special is going to break my heart.  (Because Taggart is hands down my favourite character D: )
  • Oh, Suits!  I like Jessica.  I'm hoping they don't destroy it in season 2, fingers crossed.
  • Leverage!  - Will be back in like 2 weeks or so.  It's possible this is a case where I'm more i love with the fandom than the actual show, which sounds worse than it is given how completely entertaining and energizing each episode is.  On the other hand the place I hang out most has felt sort-of-maybe frictiony, (yeah, I know there are Grifters on my flist, *waves to any reading this far*) and while on one hand I don't really care, on the other I've already found myself pulled away a bit by our last run of BE, and it wasn't so bad.  There are other places I can spend the bulk of my energy and I'll be fine.
