Hecla Island

A few weeks ago, I planned a little surprise vacation for plonq's birthday, just to get the two of us away for an overnight someplace different.

He knew we were going someplace, but was in the dark about where we were going until I got the car on the highway headed to our destination. Really... There are only so many roads running out of the city, and once you start driving north your options become limited.

Hecla Island is a lovely park in the Interlake that's far enough off the beaten path that it's not overrun in the summer, but not so far away that you feel like you need to pack a million things. We stayed the night at the resort hotel in the park, and we agreed that it would be a nice place to return to again, possibly next summer.

The park has tons of trails. If it had been slightly less hot and muggy we might have tried some more, but as it was we burned through all the water we brought with us for the hikes, and we didn't want to get slathered up with icky bug spray right before climbing back into the car for a long drive home.

The prairies get overlooked a lot - even by the people who live here - for the more dramatic vacation spots in Canada, like the Rockies. Plonq and I have visiting Churchill during polar bear season on our bucket list, but that's a trip that will require more time and planning than just an impromptu night away.
