Are you even paying attention?

School is coming along tickety-boo. The last two weeks were my hell week. I had a whole stack of assignments and things due all at once, of course. Looking back in my dayplanner, I had to finish all of these: a draft of a research design and methodology, the discussion and results section of my academic article, a research questionairre, a marketing plan, a speech outline, the speech (with slides and everything) itself and delivery, a draft of my graduate project proposal, an editing assignment, the results and intro for my academic article, my event poster for Photoshop, a Photoshop exam, and drafts of my instructional guides.

Somehow I managed to get through it all, with a minimum of panicking. Now I'm on the tail end of wrapping up my major projects. Whew!

Something happened in Editing yesterday that made me realise how freaking stupid A is. I mean, really. I knew he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but this just put a fine point on it. We were discussing urban legends, and our instructor had this page up on the screen. Take special note of the third version of the question, where the person heard from a colleague who heard from their husband who heard from their medical school prof...

Anyway, we discussed this, and why it's a perfect example of how urban legends have this veneer of authenticity. We discussed a few others, and about 20 minutes total went by. Then A put up his hand.

"But," he said, "Jamie Lee Curtis is a hermaphrodite."

"Says who?" asked the Editing instructor, one of his favourite questions. (He's the journalism teacher.)

"Well, my friend," said A.

"And where did your friend hear it from?" asked the teacher.

"He's in medical school, and he heard it from his prof," said A.

... which is EXACTLY the example we were talking about!!

The class laughed at him when the instructor pointed this out, but A insisted it was true. "Who's this prof?" asked the instructor.

"He's at the U of M," said A. "I'm not sure of the name."

And it went on. He refused to believe that the proof just wasn't there.

Yes, she could be a hermaphrodite. But no one has heard it DIRECTLY from a reliable source.

Wow. Like, wow.

Anyway, time to go listen to speeches. I'm so glad I got mine done last week so I can concentrate on other things!

school, wow, stupid people
