Well, we went to see
Ratatouille today, and I loved it. The story was a bit predictable in a lot of ways, but I was especially pleased with the parts that were not predictable.
First of all, in a story about rodents, there wasn't a cat anywhere to be found. There wasn't a mean cat antagonist, pursuing our hero as he tries to make the best food he can. Nor is there a cat connoisseur who would encourage the hero. Rats, but no cats! How refreshing! (Nothing against cats, you see, but I'm pleased that a tired story shortcut was ignored.)
Also, I am surprised that the kitchen staff never came back after walking out, except for the female chef. The bits with the rat's family was predictable, but still enjoyable.
The best part of the movie was when Ego took his first bite of the ratatouille, and was transported back to his childhood. That was truely inspired.
Anyway, the
NY Times has a recipe for ratatouille (registration required) purported to be the "movie version," but
this recipe from Smitten Kitchen seems a lot more like what I saw.
Two thumbs up - quite a fun, cute movie. :)
