Voting for a Winner

Nov 06, 2008 10:08

I admit there is some satisfaction in having voted for the winner. However, if you would base your vote on obtaining said satisfaction, you're getting a lump of coal for winter-gift-giving-holiday. On a non-electoral level, I also have my hopes that Obama is a winner. In this vein, I've decided my new name for PMSH is The Biggest Loser.

Prior to the US election, I was debating with someone on whether the Canadian or the American electoral system is less broken. I don't want to flog a dead horse on this one, so I'll just say they both have large holes in them (which people keep trying to drive a truckload of cash through). With both elections are over, I wondered to myself which system skewed the popular vote the most when it came to the election of the President/Prime Minister/Mongoose. (Hail to the Mongoose.)

Dearest Barack got ~65% of the Electoral College votes with 53% of the popular vote, giving a difference of ~12%. The Biggest Loser (by proxy through the Cons) got 46% of the seats in the House of Commons with ~36% of the popular vote, giving a difference of ~10%. Que lstima. Though this leads me to believe the electoral college votes are more distorted, they thankfully don't get to do much between elections... though I guess that's kind of like the Conservative backbenchers...er... Conservatives that aren't Stephen Harper?

In other election news, Question 2 on the MA ballot passed to decriminalize posession of marijuana... and Question 1, to shoot the state in the foot like California and do away with state income tax, failed. Now that Mitt Romney's gone, maybe it's time for me to return to the place honoured with my birth.
