Things I don't get, Part 2:

This blog entrya) 100,000 in debt doesn't seem like that much to me when you consider that it includes a mortgage. I mean, shit. That actually seems decent. I'd be happy to own a house and only have a hundred thou in debt ( Read more... )

Yup. I really disagree with her a lot. Her blog is definitely one where people whine about how hard it is to go into academia because you are starting your career so much later than your peers and making so much less money than them. But of course by "peers" they mean people their age who are going into business and finance and shit. Not people their age in general.

Jon and I make a comparable amount of money to many of his friends that are older than us and have children, and of course our prospects for the future are much better, and the type of work we do is much more pleasant. I don't feel bad about it in the least.

You've got it exactly right. We are lucky that we don't have to work as dishwashers until we are 70.

Right? Even if my paycheck is a little smaller than I might want (and quite frankly, its really fine, and any wanting is just greediness on my part), I at least have the luxury of knowing that someday I will have a job I like. That's a huge thing.

There's also a person in the comments complaining that grad schools don't warn you about the cost of delaying childbearing until after you finish your degree.

Um. Yeah. I don't know of any job that gives you warnings about how it will affect your personal life. And given how SMART these people (academics in general, and Bitch PhD's cohorts) want you to think they are, you'd think they could have worked out for themselves that waiting until you are super old to have kids is a bad idea.

This is a classic case of times when you (I) should just stop reading. But I can't! ;)
