Теперь я понимаю, почему нужно искать профессора, а не университет.
Я, например, думала - не хочу в Cornell, он далеко от моря, далеко в глубинке, и фу-фу, но все равно решила открыть их сайт по своей специальности,
и какой же там интересный профессор нашелся. Просто восторг.
Я вчера написала только 7 профессорам, но вот профессор из Cornell ответил через час:
Hello, and thank you for your email and the attached CV. You are welcome to apply, to our PhD program.
In our system, individual faculty members like myself do not make decisions alone, on accepting students. Instead, the department evaluates all applications, and selects the best applicants who show the greatest potential for contributing to anthropology.
Of course, each faculty member has some influence, and you should be sure mention in your application which faculty members you believe would be of interest for you in your studies, and which you have been in contact with.
I should point out that each year, because we only have limited resources for financial support, we are forced to reject many good applicants who would have liked to come to Cornell, and only accept 7-8 or less than 10 new PhD students. Because competition to enter Cornell graduate programs is so sharp, you would do well to apply to several other schools, not only one. It is best if you also look for several other universities with good programs, in the US and in other countries, and try to apply to those universities as well.
В Беркли тоже нашла интересного профессора, японка. Вроде в сфере ее интересов была этнография, но она мне сегодня ночью ответила:

Your academic background is impressive, but my specialty is historical ecology of hunter-gatherers, and your research topic will be difficult to be pursued under my supervision. Also, the funding situation of our department makes it difficult for me to take a foreign Ph.D. student. Sorry that I cannot be of much help. Thanks again for contacting me.

И меня считать надо как иностранного студента, хотя я гринкард-холдер и живу в Чикаго? (если она, правда, посмотрела мой CV, то там написан адрес - я в Чикаго живу).
