The Art of Drone Doom/"Ban The Burka" on Facebook

Sep 14, 2010 05:52

The first subject I'm going to be furiously ranting about this fine morning is the "Ban The Burka" group on facebook. Oh yes, the hideous Islamaphobia.

Edward also rightly pointed out that banning the burqa does not actually protect Muslim women from violence or misogyny. Hardcore Muslims are still going to have their beliefs, banning an item of clothing will not change that. There are probably far more effective ways of protecting women who are experiencing domestic violence or psychological abuse.
As a raging femnazi, I do agree that the symbolism of the burqa is inherently wrong, that women must dress modestly because men can't control themselves therefore placing blame on the victim and not the attacker. However, we perpetuate this in our own society. Like when a girl wears a mini skirt and has a couple of drinks and if she gets raped she was "asking for it". We are not blameless, it should be down to changing attitudes, not mindlessly banning items of clothing.

On to the point where I read something that threw me into a fit of fiery rage! Magic reason number 4 for these people wanting the burqa banned is "Body Odour" and I quote "For anyone who thought Indians smelt bad, wait until you’re in the vicinity of a burqa clad women in summer. I’ve read that deodorant and Islam might come into opposition due to the alcohol content of some deodorants but by and large I believe it’s just laziness." *RAGERAGERAGERAGERAGE*

I found a comment on a feminist website that summed this up perfectly for me:

"A few points:

1. The oldest justification for imperialism was that brown women needed to be saved from brown men by white men. This is no different and it is certainly not a step forward for these women.

2. They are still being restricted, except in this case the will of their religious institution is being substituted for the will of the country. Either way their agency is rendered irrelevant even if you think they are only wearing them due to cultural and religious pressure.

3. This in addition to being religious persecution is plainly racist and xenophobic and I have no doubt a large part of the motive here has nothing to do with these women and their freedom and everything to do with the people of France seeking to keep their culture as "pure" and white as possible."

Quoted...for fucking..truth!

I just cried out with joy reading that comment because that is EXACTLY! how I feel!

I must now smoke bitterly for a few moments.

Also, a mini rant. I hate to say this, but, well done Lady Gaga for successfully pissing off PETA, they're wankers. Most animal rights activists are wankers that make people think I'm a deluded moron. However PETA take the fucking piss.

A clever statement about objectification.

Anyway! Onto something more cheery and less ranty, something I've been thinking about a lot. The art of Drone Doom.

It sounds strange, it's a genre anyone with hands can play. However, when it comes down to it, guitarists are egoists, they love attention, a lot of them play like they want you to know, without any doubt that they can play and play well. Especially in the realms of heavy music and various metal genres. Hell! I've fallen for it many times!

There in lies the beauty of playing at extremely slow speeds. Taking time to think about how the notes move into eachother, creating huge soundscapes that send the listener into a trance. Enough bass to bore into their consciousness and hear dirging symphonies emerging from the delays and reverbs inbetween each chord. You can't control them, they're different every time and exist in the moment, never to be heard again. I've written riffs in faster speeds only to slow them down and let them be for awhile longer.

I can play faster, I just don't want to! I want the sounds to speak, not myself. I want them to exist and be of their own accord...I want to not have total control of the outcome. I will play the note A and that is all I have control over, from the note will explode astral voices, feeding back and shimmering. That feedback, that dirtiness in the distortion, reverberation the size of the grand canyon, glitches in the signal. Those are not imperfections.

It probably helps that I'm still slightly clueless as to how my multieffects pedal works.

Chris told me the best term the other day "Doomgaze" that is what I want to create "Drone Doomgaze" Drone Doom with 405,794,907,530,477 effects! I'm kind of already doing that I guess but...it's such a beautiful term.

Good bloody times!
