[The evening was early and when Odette stepped out of the lake, she knew what her destination was. The kitchen! First dinner like a good girl. And thankfully she did not miss the evening meal served in the Great Keep. With that done, she went to the kitchen to prepare a treat she had been craving for some time. Candied apples. With the batch ( Read more... )

You wouldn't happen to have any candied imps instead? 1

1 - Djinni prefer to snack on things of essence. Humans and their foods cause an unpleasant build-up of gas.

I don't. I'm sorry.

[That is weird and what is a djinn?]

That's terribly unfortunate. Not even a chocolate-covered foliot?

[Djinn - noun; annoyingly pretentious creature; synonymous with troll, without the warts]

I'm not entirely sure what a foliot is.

Foliots are meatier than the average imp, but taste equally well candied or chocolate-covered. 2

Then I suppose apples are the only choice?

2 - Once I had one wrapped in bacon, but the taste was not the same. Too fattening.

[Is...is someone playing a prank on her?]

They are. I'm sorry to disappoint.

[Bartimaeus is the eternal prank. On all things. Usually magicians, but pretty young women with swannish tendencies are occasionally innocent victims of his trolling.]

There's little need to apologise. 3 It wouldn't harm me to have apples, though they're a mite stingy on the sustenance side of things. You said the bonfire?

3 - Good manners are hardly expected of people in present day. After all my summonings, I've given up expecting the little courtesies in life.

Yes, by the bonfire. Please come help yourself.

[She's a little I dunno, confused by this person. But if he wants some apples, she certainly won't turn him down!]

[Confusion goes hand-in-hand with Bartimaeus - as does irritation, exasperation, and a great deal of sarcasm. Lucky you, he's come down with moderate haste to have you experience this in person!

Yes, that is Bartimaeus approaching the bonfire. His form is that of an Egyptian boy, dressed rather modernly, and he claps the hands to announce his arrival.]

Where are these apples of candy I've heard so much about? Don't be shy!

[Odette looks up the moment she hears him approaching. And she smiles.]

Right here.

[On a plate she's holding, stick side up. Help yourself, Bartimaeus.]

[Huh. Is that an honest smile after all his savoir-vivre? Obviously there is a glitch in the matrix.

Bartimaeus eyes the plate. Apples are for human consumption, but he's eaten a human before and survived (it's hardly his favourite dish, but there is something filling about consuming a magician). The same probably applies to apples, so he grabs a stick and, voila, apple in hand!

Yup. He's waiting for it to do something magical.]

There aren't enough scratches, you know.

[Said as he inspects it critically.]

How can anything be made from scratch, but have such a perfect coating!
